A few shots from the GP14 Purcell Cup held at Lough Erne Yacht Club, I had forgotten quite how hard it was to take shots at 300mm from a RIB!

    #4

    #5

Very nice set, like them all but no.3 would be my fave.

I had an unfortunate incident in a GP14 once, myself and a lad from Galway were sailing (though if I’m being honest it was more messing than sailing) on Lough Erne, we capsized the thing, the mast got stuck in the mud and the big lad from Galway broke the centre board while trying to right it. Was strictly Toppers for a while after that!

I know a few people have snapped masts in similar circumstances! It happens more down in sligo where you capsize at the top of a wave then hit the bottom and snap the top of your mast!

Generally where we sail in lough erne is fairly deep although we did run aground in a j24 about 2 months ago. “Dont worry there’s plenty of water at the island…” the foredeck managed to fish us off with the spinnaker pole although we lost our 2nd place in the race.

You’ve captured the sea well which I find very hard to do, well done.

The problem i’ve always found when shooting boats is really rough weather in photos looks quite flat and peacefull. It can be really deceiving you you have to try and catch any waves that break over the bow and things like that. This event the weather was quite calm though so there isnt much I can really do about that!

The last one, number 6 catches my eye Stephen…Think you caught them tacking very well here..Like the way you caught the boat right on its edge.

3 by a mile. By far the best sailing on display too. Some shocking crewing in some of those photo’s!

It’s hardly surprising that #3 won the event winning 5 of the 6 races :P
