MartinParticipant
Liked the look of this pulley so took a picture of it… also never posted in the still life section before so this is a first…

shutterbugParticipant:lol:   Sorry for laughing………….it brought back memories of my
Mum saying “dont forget your pully it will be cold later” Pully being short for
Pullover aka Jumper I dont know what I expected when I clicked on it but it
certainly wasnt a PULLEY  But all that said it is a very nice pulley dont
know if the very top of the shot does anything for it though?AimeeParticipantHhahaha Jenny!
Martin, I like it. I was expecting a pulley though! The balance of light and the little bit of shadow is great.
Alan RossiterParticipantI’ve been back to this several times Martin. There was something that stopped me from immediately liking the image and it’s just come to me. The shallow DOF and the contrasty finish of the pulley & its surroundings are fine but I think this really needs a severe sharpening to really make this jump out. The detail is there to do that and with the shallow DOF this can turn into quite a deep image. Of course, this is my slant on it and you may prefer it as it is.
Alan.
b318ispParticipantMartinParticipantThanks for the feedback all, good suggestion about the sharpening.
I rescanned the shot and smart sharpened it, possibly went too far with the sharpening but here yea go…
b318ispParticipantThat’s a bit better but does seem a little overdone (you could also selectively sharpen using the sharpen tool in Photoshop). I think the real issue is the shallow DoF and the focal plane being to the front causing thing behind to be OOF.
jb7ParticipantI think it’s called a block…
I think…The whole sharpening thing doesn’t bother me-
I dunno about you Martin,
but if somebody goes to the trouble of exposing a piece of film,
I might expect the sharpening to be a physical/chemical process that just can’t be seen at the level of reduction of the pic posted here-Although this is nicely composed, and exposed, and processed,
and I’m sure would make a lovely print,
I’m kinda not grabbed by it-
I seldom am by these type of pictures.I think it’s a process thing, I might need to see a print before I can gauge what you are trying to do,
and as such, posting it here is not necessarily going to do any more than show the idea, or intention-There is another thing,
this to me is not strictly a still life-
as are most of the pictures posted in this section-
Though it wouldn’t be unusual for most to disagree-j
