This is my first attempt at shots using my new Canon 40D . I used the landscape function on auto ( ooh! I’m sooo embarrassed even typing that  ) anyway, we all have to begin somewhere right?
My question is ; does anyone know what the red dot is in the pic?????

It’s where the sun caught your lens. The shape is a reflection of the shape
    of your diaphragm.

Don’t ever be embarrassed. You’ll get loads of good tips here. If you find
the sky is blown (your camera will tell you) try reducing the exposure by half a stop
    and taking the photo again.

Good shot, composition wise you know what to do. Dont be afraid of Auto just learn what its failing are and then move to the A and S modes to allow you to control the shot. Good advice from Pete , so check the histogram and learn to know when to add or take away exposure or shoot in RAW and control in post processing

i really like this shot i thnk you got som lovely cloud formations above the light house.

maybe try cloning out the dot ,but i can see past that and your intentions were fine its a great location and a lovely shot.

dont be afraid of saying u used an automatic function because i was the same but i found in the beggining it didnt bother me because it was more about the objects and the scene than the other things.

    great shot :D
