My First Wedding – Critique Please

I have been given a great opportunity to shadow a local photographer on some of their summer weddings and hopefully some studio work. So yesterday was the first day I went out with them.

My equipment for the day was:

    Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-70mm, 50mm 1.8, Sigma 55-200mm, Camera Flaah (-2.7)

The weather was ok, cloudy so there wasn’t much squinting. My equipment is basic as you can see and as I didn’t have a speed flast I couldn’t take any pictures inside the chapel as it was very dark and anything I tried just looked like crap.

As I was a shadow for the day I had to stand to the side of the main photographer and make do with the angles I was given so very few of the photos have any of the party looking at me so I went for more candid shots and tried to capture moments that he mightn’t of got.

I’d love some feedback on the set I have created, which can be viewed, in full, here:

    Hi!

Just had a look through your photos – I am particularly interested in wedding shots these past few weeks as I am doing one at the end of this week, and I am far from experienced at it with far from great equipment! I can comment on my impressions, but will leave the technical comments to those more experienced (and will be reading with interest to apply myself!).

I think you did well considering you were just following the main photographer. As was your aim, I think you captured some lovely shots of the kids & people that weren’t perhaps the main focus of the attention. You also capatured some great candid smiles and expressions of the B&G.

I think the best shots in the set are the details and close ups of hands/rings/flowers etc. Gave me some good ideas!

Well done! What did you learn from the day?

Thanks for your comments Nicola. What did I learn….well for one thing its tiring work and I wasn’t the main photographer. Lots of concentration needed to make sure you’re doing all the things the B&G want but on all the tech aspects as well. I also learned that only having one camera body slows you up big time! If I could afford it I’d get myself another :) Also learned that some shots that have worked for previous brides don’t on others. Keep talking to the people involved to put them at ease and have a laugh with them too. I really enjoyed it though…best of luck with yours!

Brilliant stuff there. Love the angles and the different poses. You’ve caught some beautiful moments.
Look like a happy bunch too.

    Well done

Some great expressions captured there. Watch out for shooting on the tilt so much. They can look odd when displayed in a book or frame.

i pulled a copy of this image off flickr and worked the levels and obtain true whites – this image benefits from resetting the white point in levels.

I have not posted the edit since you state that you would prefer no edits.

You also have dust on the sensor, you would be well advised to buy a sensor brush or similar to sweep the sensor before every job.

I also think that photos on the angle could end up looking like a dated cliche soon (I’m very guilty of this)

Thanks for the comments peps :) I’ve been out once since and done a few more pictures (on my flickr) I also got some presets/actions recently to help with the colour processing as I am aware its very poor. Will post some more at a later stage for C&C.
