Kasement,
Some of the most interesting (great, different) Gig shots I’ve seen, Great energy.
The crops and the lighting, oh the flash – what was it?Great Stuff
kasementParticipantcheers keimae,
They were all shot on a Yashica T4 (35mm 3.5 carl zeiss lens w/built in flash) with kodak portra 160 vc film.
The band themselves are amazing and there was a great atmosphere in the place to begin with so that made things alot easierIve more shots at http://www.flickr.com/photos/karlmcc/sets/72157606335176822/
ben4130ParticipantGreat colours. Ive been wanting a t4 for so long now.
The band are awesome to photograph alright, They just dont stop for the whole set.
Still havent seen them with the new keyboard player yet.Punk RockMemberOk C&C time!
These do capture the feel of the gig and have great composition but they also could have been even better!#1 Is the best IMO but pity you didn’t get the top of his head and his left arm/guitar.
#2 The internal flash lets this picture down, if you had have had an external flash the guy wouldn’t be so bright and out of sync with the rest of the pic.
#3 Doesn’t do much for me.
#4 External flash would have got rid of the red eye and needs to be cropped to the left. You def have a good eye for pictures though.
I too always had no interest in the external flash as it makes Cam heavier and bigger but I do so much gig photography that as I got more experienced I could see the need for it, I had some great pics ruined by the internal flash. If you check my pix.ie you will see my older photo sets are the internal and the newer the external flash, it def makes a diff.
Look forward to seeing your next gig set, I’m at a gig tomm night and will be taking a few.
ben4130ParticipantPunk rock, a t4 is a 35mm compact camera, it does not take an external flash, google it to see what he was using and maybe you will see deeper into the photos.
pete4130MemberYeah, a T4 (and T4 super’s have the waist level view finder) are fantastic cameras. point and shoot with an amazing Zeiss lens, 35mm focal length, f3.5 I think, are rated up to 3200 ISO and have a light metering system that pretty much rivalled SLR’s at the time of manufacture. As Ben said, knowing the camera and seeing the results from it are alot better than most peoples attempts at gig photography. Check them on Ebay, they sell for way more now 2nd hand than they cost new years ago!
Been trying to get my hands on one for a while now at a decent price.
Check out Terry Richardson, he’s shot some of the most amazing celebrity portraits on a T4.I think the Humanzi shots are great, especially considering you were only shooting 160 film! They’re oozing sweat, grit, grime & Rock ‘n’ Roll.
….goes off to check ebay for a T4 again.
EDIT:
I checked your pix.ie Punkrock and tbh, none of them do anything for me. They all look like random snaps with flash that just killed the atmosphere of the show and look they all look quite generic.Punk RockMemberFair enough on the Cam we’ll just have to agree to disagree on what format we prefer for gig atmosphere.
:)ben4130ParticipantTo be honest Myself and pete shoot digital at gigs, however, there is no best format for shooting.
I think its good to experement.
Ocassionally i come across medium format shooters at gigs, and i would love to see their results.
If i had the time and money i would shoot b+w film alot more at smaller venues.
I feel some of my best shots have come from the era when i shot film. But each to their own i guess.
Personally i commend people who shoot the likes of yashicas t4’s, medium formats, holga’s and such at a gig, because it does take alot more effort.
But i think on a commercial scale digital is your only bet.
Its all about finding out what works best for your needs and adapting to that. There is a difference between commercial and fine art practice so depending on which route we chose to follow we are going to be bias.
But this is the nature of photography, one mans gold can be another mans garbage and vice versa.
Punk RockMemberI appreciate the replies and pms about the guys efforts in using that particular camera and the excellent effort he put in!
As I said I didn’t see the Cam or know about the cam he mentioned!!
I just assumed it was a normal C&C! So I obviously withdraw the iso/light comments!!kasementParticipantYeah think its important to take into account that these are taken with a t4 and i was using a certain type of film and going for a certain type of look, wanted to get the detail/crops, sweat and atmosphere.
im not really interested in doing the straight up NME gig shots, Ive shot gigs with my dslr punk rock (canon 5d w/ flash and zoom lens) and have to say i prefer the t4, its smaller, lighter and image quality is great but it will have a certain type of look which is down to personal taste. have a look at my flickr and you’ll see my digital work http://www.flickr.com/photos/karlmcc/ben- if i had the time and money id do the exact same, used a brownie at a couple of gigs awhile back just experimenting and I love my polaroid sx-70, sadly for work i just use the digital slr for handiness
ben-keep searching for t4’s, i got mine off a german seller on ebay, his whole ad was in german and i think that might have confused/put people off so got the camera for a good price
ben4130ParticipantTO be honest, im beyond broke at the moment so it may be a while before i can buy the t4. To me it seems like a poor mans leica, as it uses a similar lens.
Im going to shoot a gig tonight using a pinhole camera if i can find mine.
might have some interesting results.Hopefully ill get to see some more results from the t4 form you.
Have you looked at the likes of Terry Richardson and Mario Testino and see what they are doing with the T4.Also just wondering is it the T4 or the T4 super with waist level viewfinder?

Ben made it to the gig tonight!
kasementParticipantits just the regular t4 ben (couldnt find a t4 super going for cheap enough!)
Im actually looking for a camera, the konica hexar, it what many would call the poor man leica, there is alot more control and flexibility with it (looking at the AF model rather then RF), the T4 is really just a point and shoot 35mm camera, still love it though
Thats a funny lookin’ pinhole camera!!!
ben4130Participanthahaha, i couldnt find my little pinhole when i was leaving so i brought the d3 only
