Advise on black dog pics

Any advise of black dog. My spaniel tends to be difficult to catch on cam. she is a poser but still hard to
get a good photo. Here is a few lucky ones.I know this is a bit blurry but she was running quickly and i couldnt make her run up and down a field for the photo

[/b]What kind of camera do you have Malcolm?
Depends on what mode you shoot in ,if you have a Canon try AI Servo and a high speed and it will “Track” movement and stick with it, as long as you are fast.
As for number 2 and 3 , a black dog can really fool a camera’s metering system, when you focus on the dog the camera automatically wants to brighten that photo, because it wants to see the black as mid-grey and there fore the area around the dog gets brighter(blown highlights)Number 3 is used with flash and probably too close with on board flash.
Switch to manual and meter off something that light is falling on, grass or even the palm of your hand. Lock that reading ,in your head or the * on the back of the camera then try shoot.
If you shoot in RAW they all can be recovered.

I have a black spaniel also, and I have the same problem,
I found that shooting outside on a dull day gave the best results
or if shooting inside use natural light and a reflector rather than
flash.That looks a beautiful Spaniel.. Is it a cocker? Some good advice there so far, if the Dog is really active it might be helpful to take them for a long (spaniel long!) walk before shooting, that way the Dog will be more relaxed and more likely to sit, stay, down for you. I would also suggest an enclosed space, such as garden or well lit room… Clearing background clutter is good too. I have taken a few pictures of Jess in the hallway of my house and the worded well, bright carpet and white walls made some decent light.
I find little bit of cheese are good to keep a Dogs attention, just little bits though… Hope this helps.

thanks sinead. its a cocker alright.. i have some more pics of her on flickr. I actually call her a camera whore!. as soon as she hears the cam beeping she comes running in and throws her nose up to the lens. In most cases cluther would have to be photoshopped out because the natural pic i want is at that moment. Natural is what i like but camera skill and thinking is essential i reckon. I shall take on your advise with everyone else and keep shooting. She certaintly gives me loads of practice.
doggies choc drops work great. Especially when i try to do a reflection pic in her eye.
