Nikon D40 help, please
-
StevieParticipant
I finally put my hand in pocket and bought a D40 earlier today.
I’m well pleased with the camera, but I’m having difficulty with loading the softare. The installation cd seems to be blank (or at least my computer doesn’t seem to accept that there is a CD in drive).
Reading the instructions – I need to load the software before I connect the camera (which is what I’d expect), but I’m not too bothered about all the software that’s supposedly on the disc – just the driver so the computer recognises the camera.
I’ve looked at the Nikon UK website but can’t quite find what I’m looking for.My question is…. do I actually need the driver or would I be able to use Windows scanner and photo wizard to move the photos to the computer? I know I can back to the shop tomorrow with the discs, but wondered if anyone could offer any insight or advice?
Thanks in advance.guthrijParticipantI never connect any of my cameras to my computer. I just take out the card and stick it in a USB card reader and copy the images to the hard drive.
Cheers.

oebParticipantIf you are using windows XP you dont need the software. Just plug it in and it should recognise it as an external drive (It will appear under ‘My Computer’) You can then just drag your photos to somewhere on your computer and delete them right off the card from there.
I re-read your post and realized you are doing that already. That’s fine, mostly I find the software that comes with these things is crap anyway, and you are only going to be editing them in photoshop anyway. The only thing of interest the CD probably has is a way of converting from NEF to Jpg, but adobe has utilities for that too.
StevieParticipantThanks a lot for the input.
I haven’t actually connected my camera to the computer yet – just in case, but it sounds as if the wizard will do everything I want it to do.
I agree with what you’re saying about the imaging software included as a package can be a bit rubbish sometimes. I had one with a scanner, and one with the Fuji camera I used to have – I just want to move the images from the camera to the computer, but the manual makes it sound as if you HAVE to use the software.
The scanner still annoys me – I can use the wizard to scan prints on XP, but have to connect it to my older PC (windows 98 ) if I want to scan slides or negs.
Thanks again for everyone’s help.ExpresbroParticipantI agree with the above comments Steve. Forget about ever connecting your camera to the PC. Just buy yourself a compatible card reader (one that reads SD Cards) and attach that to your computer. It’s much quicker and it wont run down your cameras battery. You can buy Card readers for practically nothing these days and you don’t need anything fancy, just as long as it will accept SD cards…oh and make sure it also accepts SDHC cards..which means it will take cards over 2Gb. Some of the older ones wont.
Hope that helps

8)StevieParticipantThanks again for all the advice. I ordered a card reader from http://www.memorybits.co.uk – it’ll read sdhc cards, too, so I hope it’s what I needed.
