A noob and his photos

    Hi all

I started off last year with a Fuji S6500fd, mainly because I have a tendency to go through hobbies without sticking to them and didn’t want to splash out on a DSLR and then not make use of it! For all it costs it is a very capable camera IMO and a great beginner camera, however with the price of second hand 350D’s etc where they are now I’d just get one of those if I were buying again as a first timer.

All of the pics on my site (so far) were taken with this camera and havent been edited in about 6 months, during which time my Photoshop skillz have improved dramatically so I reckon I’ll re-edit them soon and make a better job of a few of them.

Heres a few more pics from the last few months, again taken with the Fuji.

Took the camera with me down to the Marble Arch Caves a while back. I’d expected there to be more artificial light along the walkway but it was unfortunately rather dark. Some of the main features were reasonably well lit, so I switched to RAW, ISO400 (any higher is noise city with the Fuji) and lowered the shutter speed as much as possible.

Straight off the camera most of the photos were pretty darn dark but thankfully RAW let me bring them up a good bit without too much noise. I’m still working out how to use Noise Ninja so I’ll probably re-edit these when I get more familiar with it, #6 in particular is quite poor. Some of them look like some kind of alien planet or something, would be a cracking place if you could get down on your own with a tripod.

Anyway, a few hours of Lightroom later these are the best results.

Last month I bought a 400D 18-55mm and headed out to Castlewellan on the bike, after which I sent an hour walking round trying to get used to the Canon. Definitely operates differently to the Fuji, aperture settings seem to have a much greater effect on exposure and DOF. The biggest change, and biggest downfall of bridge cameras like the Fuji is the viewfinder. For me its a revelation! Being able to see so clearly through it and manual focus with accuracy is awesome.

I didn’t intend to HDR these images but they suited it to a T and I do love HDR, despite it being so common atm. These are just single image “HDR” and only very slight to bring out the detail in the brickwork and the sky.

Lastly, I went to Belfast Castle and took a few shots. Very disappointed at how they turned out, with this one being the only image I’d care to reluctantly show anyone. However, I think I know what I did wrong which is the main thing!

A tip would be not too post so many photo’s (usually about 3/4 max is good) in one go and post them in the appropiate sections ie Landscape,Street,Architecture…..some nice shot so keep posting!!

What can I say, I was bored last nite! Thought it was better to put all my previous stuff in the one thread, rather than starting 10 different threads to show it all separately.

Any shots from now on will go into individual topics.

    Thanks.

Great Introduction ,great start and great images. Number 1 for me also. especially for the Green that blends in with the brickwork, the graffiti and the angle of the shot. Depth of field spot on ,exposure spot on well done,

Nice intro Graham..and not in the least bit boring.

I started with a similar camera as well (The 5600) and progressed on to a Nikon D80 which is still my camera.

As you say, it’s a revelation when you finally get a decent DSLR in your hands. For me, as well as the proper viewfinder, the lack of shutter lag was a major improvement, especially as I like to shoot a lot of candids and street.

Anyways..welcome to PI and look forward to seeing more of your work.
