Canon 70-200 F4 L (non IS) or Sigma 70-200 F2.8?

Can anyone advise me on which to go for? The Sigma is faster but how is it on image quality? Some reviews talk of chromatic abb at 200mm. Does anyone out there have one? I have three Sigmas already and am very happy with them. Thanks.
paulParticipantPadraigParticipantI don’t have a mid range zoom. I need a bit of an all rounder. I mainly do wildlife but my sigma 50-500 is ok for hide work but not as a carry around lens. I already own a sigma 1.4 conv. So I am leaning towards the sigma. My main concern is image quality.
paulParticipantThe Canon 70-200mm f/4 is a brilliant lens. Great quality, great build, and very sharp. Great for wildlife and good light sport. Not great for low light conditions.
I’d always go for Canon over Sigma, when you can afford to, just for the quality factor.
nfl-fanParticipantI’ll second that.. the Canon 70-200mm f/4 is pure class.. the image quality is unreal.
I use it for Landscape, Wildlife, Sports, Street… brill lens.

PadraigParticipantstcstcMemberI have the canon, have used the sigma a few times and its not half as good
the AF is quicker and its sharper on the canon
the only thing about the sigma is the f2.8
PadraigParticipantThanks Steve. I suppose there is no getting away from the fact that canon L glass is superior.
PeteMcDMemberI was in a similar situation a while back. I was also looking at the Sigma 50-150 2.8, which is a nice focal range on a 1.6x body.
In the end a 70-200 f4 came up, with about 100 shots on it, for silly money so I went with that. It has been flawless, and is beautiful to use.
If prices were similar I’d have probably bought a Sigma 70-200. But in hindsight, and having used the Canon 70-200 f4, I’m glad I chose it over the Sigma.

Hows about the Canon F2.8 IS version?
Totally different price bracket, so not really a valid comparison.
rc53MemberWhy go for the non-IS? The IS model has as good or better IQ than the non-IS.
aoluainParticipantIm using th F4 L non is and second what the others have said,
Brilliant lens.
if you can stretch the budget to it and a little further go for the IS version too.I was ripped off with mine, bought it second hand in a dublin store
for €600.00 you’ll get them cheaper than that new now.Shop around and buying second hand is a good option as these L lenses are built to last.
Good luck
