Series of shots take on the Karokoram Highway on the Pakistan side close to China (apologies that they are not embedded, will get around to that evenutally).
Very nice Liam,
is the Karakoram Highway a safe place to travel though these days?
I have heard it is the most amazing road trip one can do. And I am interested in the region, I have read all Peter Hopkirk’s books on there and abouts -“The Great Game” is a wonderful read if you haven’t read it.
Its a few years since I was there; though at that time Pakistan had entered into war with India in the border area around Kashmir (or at least hostilities had escalated between the two, I think they are always technically at war but not always actually fighting…).
Anyways, everyone in India was warning tourists not to go to Pakistan, but I found it to be 100% safe and very friendly. I had no problems whatsoever on the karokoram highway. Unfortunately, the bad press meant that the local tourist industry was sufferring when I was there, and I’d say its only gotten worse for them since, I feel sorry for the hotel owners.
I assume it is still safe to travel. I would certainly go back. A much bigger risk is crazy bus drivers.
It is an amazing road. Whereas in other countries you have to trek for days to see the high peaks, in Pakistan you can see it all from the road. A lot of people cycle it. When i was there Martina Navritilova was cycling it. Another French chap was going up on roller blades.
