Have you had it delivered yet? I’m always wary of a site with no easily found postal address. Maybe I’m just too suspicious!

EDIT: found the address, they are in Kowloon, Hong Kong. I wonder what their returns policy is?

    Hi Guys,

I have the lens, ordered it last Friday and it was delivered Thursday. Its new and it has a lens hood and canon tripod ring. As long as the goods are shiped from the uk (Europe) you don’t have to pay vat or duty. If they bring them in from Hong Kong is their business. There are alot of good reviews on the internet regarding them. I plan on using them again.

I read their T&C’s and it seems they do ship from Hong Kong and they explicitly state they want nothing to do with you if you get stung for VAT & customs.

BY PURCHASING A PRODUCT THROUGH THE SITE, YOU AGREE THAT SUCH PURCHASE AND THE IMPORT OF SUCH PRODUCT COMPLIES WITH THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY TO WHICH YOU HAVE REQUESTED SIMPLYELECTRONICS.NET TO SHIP THE PRODUCT, AND AGREE THAT YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED THE SOLE “IMPORTER” OF THE PRODUCT TO YOUR COUNTRY FOR ALL PURPOSES, INCLUDING CUSTOMS REGULATIONS AND COPYRIGHT AND TRADEMARK LAWS. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT SIMPLYELECTRONICS.NET’S ROLE IS LIMITED TO PROCURING PRODUCTS AVAILABLE IN ASIA AND OTHER REGIONS AND MAKING THESE PRODUCTS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE SITE TO YOU FOR PURCHASE IN HONG KONG AND FOR YOUR IMPORT TO YOUR COUNTRY. IN NO EVENT WILL SIMPLYELECTRONICS.NET BE A PARTY TO THE IMPORT OF SUCH PRODUCTS NOR WILL IT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LIABILITY ARISING UNDER THE LAWS OF ANY COUNTRY OTHER THAN THE HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION FOR THE IMPORT AND SALE OF PRODUCTS AVAILABLE ON THE SITE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION CUSTOMS REGULATIONS AND CUSTOMS HOLDS, DETENTIONS AND SEIZURES AND COPYRIGHT AND TRADEMARK LAWS.

Dont get me wrong, I’ve imported from HK many times sucessfully myself, but always in the knowledge I could be stung for import duty and tax.

It adds spice come delivery time, will it be a parcel or a letter from HM customs and Excise!

The other thing to be wary of is warranty returns. In the UK, the warranty is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. So returns postage would be back to HK I presume, as there doesn’t seem to be a UK address anywhere on that site.

    Hi,

For example: I want to buy Canon 50/1.2 L from Simply E. The price is 799.95 pounds. All right. And do I have to pay VAT? I ask because I have to give VISA’s number before most important information:
    Subtotal: £799.95
    (includes Estimated VAT £0.00)
Shipping and VAT calculated on next page.

So I would like to know finally price before I give VISA’s number. And secon question: Canon Lenses you have are coming from HK?

Just on this site and looked up the 24-70mm L Canon lense….on their site it’s € 917.54 and on Calumet up North it’s €1,088.07.

But one question that I might as well post here, is if I purchase some gear (and I’m talking about a pretty large studio set up) do I have to pay VAT on that if I give my VAT number?

    According to…

    http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/taxation/vat/how_vat_works/index_en.htm

    it states

“Goods supplied between taxable persons (or VAT registered traders) are exempted with a right to deduct the input VAT (zero-rated) on despatch if they are sent to another Member States to a person who can give his VAT number in another Member State. This is known as an “intra-Community supply”

my guess is that VAT is aleatory….. might be as it might not….. ;)
