Cat & Mouse Chase… well sort of…

Orange_juiceParticipant
Hi Guys,
Was out in Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania in July and got this little chase going on.
I think the detail in the shot is fairly good considering the speed these guys were going. I like the fact of the lion actually not touching the ground in full flight and also been able to see her eyes on the victim.I’ve decided not to show the aftermath of this as there wasn’t much left after the cubs got the feed as well.
What do you think guys?
OJ
figParticipantWould like to see it a little bigger but looks pretty good at that size.
PixelleMemberThe animals are placed so well; with eyes visible as you say.
Was it a case of being in the right place with the right settings at the right time?
Maybe bit more contrast?Orange_juiceParticipantBigger image posted above now.
Was definetly a case of being in right place at right time.
This was first lion we saw after 4 days.
When we came on them first they (2 females & 4/5 cubs) were doing nothing really just lying down licking themselves. Then they saw the warthog in the distance and went very quietly to surround the animal. 1 lion chased and lead the warthog to the other to grap.
It was really amazing to see it all from start to finish.
All the hyena’s came along with the vultures, and 1 jackal & a torny eagle as well.Lions had their feed and fairly devoured it and left the scraps for the rest.
The image itself is cropped a little bit from the original one and I added a bit of saturation only to it.
Sorry Pixelle to sound stupid, what do you mean by contrast? I only use Picasa o edit the photos I have.

Alan RossiterParticipantI think it’s a great image considering the assumed speed of the chase. You do get the anticipation of the inevitable and with the eyes visible you get drawn into the unfortunate daily life of nature.
A little bit of contrast adjustment might help but I wouldn’t go too far with improving this one – it looks fine to me just s it is.
Alan.
nfl-fanParticipantYep… super shot… a super trip too I would imagine.
I reckon the beasts could taken a touch more sharpening.. but not too much. I had a play with the contrast too as Alan suggested but you need to be careful on this one as the smallest curves adjustment results in a dramatic colour shift. There are other ways that avoid colour shifts… but I dunno what they are.
Nice job.

You could convert to Lab mode and apply the contrast to the Lightness channel…that should do it. I can’t answer for Picassa though.
Alan.
b318ispParticipantYes, the picture is not about being technically good, but it is about the occasion – a real difficult shot to time right, so well done.
Orange_juiceParticipantI actually forgot to mention that we were moving as well
when I got to take this as the driver was trying to follow the animals and get into the right position.
Considering the roads there as well, I am really happy to have got this one, you should hvae seen some of the others at the same time, all over the place to be honest. But I have to say that the whole experience and excietment when this was happening was unreal, definelt yhte highlight of a 9 day safari.
We did get to see another kill (a gazelle)by a pack of lions, but didn’t really get too many shots as I wanted to enjoy the whole thing without worrying about getting more shots. Plus there was too many gazelles to know which one to aim for, as there was 4 lions as well.
I can highlly recommend going there, as seeing the animals in the zoo is just not the same.

It might be if you had a few too many gazelles…
