What should i do?

hello everybody, i am new to the forum and im really loving it so far.

my question is should i buy a canon 17-85 used to replace my 18-55 kit lens or should i save up longer and get the 24-105? is the difference between L-series and non-L lens really that great? at the moment i am looking for a good standard zoom lens, this lens would be my only lens for some time so i want to make sure i make the right choice.
i know this sounds a bit vague but any info would be helpful. thanks

I can’t give you a lot of advice on Canon lenses…I don’t use them but one thing I will say is that I have the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8. Sounds great but the difference between the 24-70 and the Sony kit lens of 18-70mm f4-5.6 is the 18-24mm. There’s times when this 6mm does leave me wanting.

This info probably won’t alter your choice of specific Canon lens, “L” or not, but worth consideration.

thats what i cant decide between, if i want the extra length or if i want the extra width. i guess i will have to watch what im shooting at over the next few days to see if i need the width or length but thanks for the help anyway.

The 17-85 is a good standard lens on a crop body.
There is also an f2.8 17-55 which is well thought of, for crop bodies only.

While the 24-105 is very good, it’s focal range is more suited to a FF sensor – but, perhaps
    you might upgrade sometime?

After all, lenses keep most of their value, and continue to work…but digital bodies
are like computers nowadays…you ‘need’ to upgrade every two or three years.

i do plan on upgrading my body in time, so i would want a lens that i could bring with me if i changed. does anybody out there who has these either of these lenses want to give me a little pro’s and con’s for the lenses?

    hi,

i have used both lenses, i have the 17-85 myself and i rented
    a 24 – 105 a few weeks back.

if it was me i would not hesitate about the 24-105 the lens its brilliant,
crystal clear compared to the 17-85.

i am not hugely happy with this lense, as i am getting soft results
on a regular basis. maybe i just got a bad copy.

either lens will to do, but results you get from the L will speak for them
selfes. and you can hold onto your kit 18 – 55, for when you need the extra
    width.

    good luck

I have the 24-105 and delighted I did.
It’s pricey alright but results speak for itself.
But forget about it if you like shooting in low light f4
It’s an EF Lens too so if you ever did decide to go full frame you won’t be offloading it.
The problem with an L lens is that your want more of them.

    Hi

I use the Sigma 18-125mm lens. It covers all the ground you are looking for AND it has OS (same as IS on canon or VR on Nikon) You can get it for €350 ish.

I really can’t fault the lens at all. I use it 99% of the time now. This is an example of it. If you have any questions or are in the North Kildare area and want to have a look or try it out then PM me. Mine is a canon fit btw.

thanks for that ballyman, i really dont know a thing about sigma. people have been saying they have faults with them, is this true?
what is the build quality like?

If you plan to upgrade to a Full Frame like the 5D or 5D Mark II, you will need Canon L lenses. These cameras will out resolve regular Canon lenses at wide angles.

thanks for that, i guess i do plan on upgrading to a full-frame canon in the future. so i will be going for the 24-105, does anybody know any good places to get it?

You could buy from the US or Hongkong but Calumet are an excellent company to deal with. I have just bought a Nikon D3 from them. Great service especially if you order by phone.

There is a Calumet shop in Belfast, Boucher Road, just off M1. I haven’t been there, so I don’t know what they have in stock etc.

Why would you bother with Kea. It is £580 + £46 postage. Calumet is £670. The saving is just not worth the hassle of buying a non European lens. You would in all probability get away with paying VAT but you never know. Buy it in the UK for peace of mind.
