Lakes, boats, sunset! What more could you ask for!

Two quite dark. The first one I like because of the wood grain showing on the seat of the boat. Not great at this resolution. The second one. Well, what can I say. Obliging fisherman comes along and rows between you and the setting sun, you just have to take a shot!

    All C&C welcome.

First one, well I can’t see the wood grain & so am just seeing a large silhoutte…..second one I like a lot though, lovely horizon and I can almost hear the swoosh of the oars looking at it…..where was it taken as a matter of interest?

While there is nice detail visible in the seat planking in the first one, for me it doesn’t work because there’s really no composition to speak of in the shot. The second boat is only half in the frame, and the general rule is to either include objects completely, or remove them entirely – otherwise it ruins the integrity of the image.

I’d say positioning yourself differently may have worked better here, but it’s hard to know what’s outside the frame – perhaps there were other things which would get in the way as well. Just food for thought.

Secondly, the image is a bit too dark – the bow of the boat is completely dark and occupies a significant part of the bottom of the image. Lightening that up a touch just to show a hint of detail would improve things for you.

The colours and tones are nice, but you’re let down by composition.

The second image is much better – here the silhouette works much better and the composition is a bit better. It could have been significantly improved by waiting a half a second until the fisherman was a little further along – that way you’d have a diagonal relationship between him and the sun resulting in a stronger composition.

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Thanks for the comments.

Liam, it was taken at Lough Owel outside Mullingar.

Peter, thanks very much for the in depth critique. I’ve been reading some of the others you’ve posted and they’re always very informative. As for these photos, they are a bit dark and I’ll get to work on that. Not a lot I could do about the second boat in the first shot. There were about 40 rowboats all lined up together so no getting one on its own. I may have one of the fisherman taken a second later and I’ll look at working on that.

    Again thanks.

Have to say, I quite like the composition of the second one.. I like the way the reflection runs into the fisherman..
Did you meter from the sun’s reflection in the water for this one?

    Paul,

Shutter 1/160, f10, ISO 200. I was conscious of the guy in the boat rowing and I didn’t want that or the ripples on the water blurred, hence the shutter speed. I was just lucky too that the sun was half obscured by the cloud. I think if that hadn’t been there the sky would have been blown completely.
