Went to the beach yesterday evening to do some lone exposures, but it didn’t really work out… (hard work with the springer  )

well heres the new boys 2p worth.
sorry to say it does nothing for me .
no clouds no waves the one plus is the rule of thirds….
well done for that. however this is my opinion ,some others will love it.

Cheers Paddy, the sea was pretty calm when I shot this, but it’s the long exposure, 25″, that has gave the water a milky effect. Not everyones cup of tea I suppose. Not much I can do about the clouds though, was just happy to see a clear blue sky for a change!!

    Thanks again for comments.

I understand what you tried to do and why.
The long exposure may have been a little to long.
I bet if you tried you could make the same shot with a salt seller a table and a white tablecloth.
You could try covering the lens for a few seconds with a card this way you can cut the exposure time down

What is it you think I was trying to do? I went there to shoot long exposures and I wanted to try to get some pictures with an empty, minimal feel… Personally I don’t think it was too long, in fact I would have been happier with longer.

Strange advice, but I guess it makes a change from “2 steps to the left… “or try a different crop”.

I suppose I could… Or I could just change the camera settings?

    Hi Sinead

I think you did pretty well with that shot. It might lack a bit of intersting foreground, it would have been better if you could make out some waves for example, but overall it’s moody and the composition is pretty good. I like it!

    Hi Sinead,

I had to think quite a bit about this.

I like it! as it is.
The minimal b+w feel to it is nice but I think it could be stronger.
For me the lighthouse id too far away and thats is the focal point.
I rarely do long exposures so i wouldnt like to comment on the 25 seconds.

I know you have mentioned this but maybe a PANORAMIC crop would be interesting?

In the end in general I like it.

Here’s another on the “I like it, but…” bandwagon. Yeah, I see what you were at…I do it myself too and this one does appeal to me. But here’s what I’ve found. Details in the distance on a long exposure tend to loose detail, or definition. So, what I’ve done in the past is burn in a little detail. In PS magnify the image (Ctrl +) until your work is kept well within the area and use this. It will maintain your minimalist approach but give the main source of detail that added emphasis. At this level it also gives the lighthouse some sharpness and contrast all in one fell swoop.

And that little marker bouy to the left…hugely distracting in a minimalist image.

Ok.. Thanks again everyone for comments.

Alan and Alan, I get what you are saying about loss of detail and agree totally. I find the Landscape section the hardest to post in, I feel like I’m fumbling around with it :|

I did think about cloning out the buoy… But I thought it added a little balance, I understand it could be distracting and appreciate what you say Alan about it being out of place in a minimalist picture.

Here is the panoramic crop, added a little contrast but it still has the too far away issue I think (did the edit before I saw your post Alan.)

Hey aoluain…I was here first…change your name! It’s getting confusing around here

I like that crop…it certainly works. But balance is for scales…don’t be afraid to create a bit of tension (image tension, not nfl tension  )

I quite like the second, but it emphasises the strange bubble thingy that is
visible, if not prominent, in the first version. There’s also a tiny hint of
barrel distortion which would be worth correcting, I think. It wouldn’t be
enough to see in most photos, but this one is so sparsely populated that
    it becomes apparent.

    Back to the topic . . .

    I like the crop sinead.
sorry now if i get a bit too picky, I probably would have left a little mote to the bottom.
    But its trial and error

    I like it though.
