Tripod upgrade
-
munsterman28Participant
Hi all
I have a reasonbaly basic manfrotto tripod which needs upgrading. I need a good sturdy tripod the will hold a decent size wildlife spotting scope and a 7d with a 100-400mm Canon L lense and the tripod head. Also plan to add a 300mm F2.8 soom.
I want to upgrade the tripod at the moment and will get the head in another month or twos time. I’ll work away with the head I have at the moment until I have the funds but would evetually look to use a gimbal or wimberley head with the tripod.
So im looking for a good tripod that will hold the gear safely.
Any recommendations??
Thanks
DSeaviewParticipantI’ve used the Manfrotto 055XPROB for the last few years and I’ve had no issues with it, I use the same combination as yourself. I have the aluminium version and maybe my next upgrade would be the carbon fibre version. I use a Manfrotto 804RC2 head and it works fine. I previously uesd a Manfrotto 322RC2 head and I didn’t like it. I bought mine from Barker Photography in Cork.

Dave.
shutterbugParticipant+ 1 for 055PROB very sturdy, I use it with a Benro gimbal, very good set up for me anyway,
I would mostly have a 300mm with a 2x convertor on it.
Just as an afterthought Dave, there is surprisingly little difference in the weight of the
Aluminium and Carbon legs when the head is fixed to it.ossie13ParticipantI have a Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3 with a 410 head this is a very sturdy set up! I would suggest visiting your nearest Camera shop and having a look/feel of the tripods to see which is more suitable for you!
And I have to disagree with Jenny there is a .5kg difference in the CF v Alu legs and if you are carrying a lot of kit over a period of time this does come into it? It was the main reason I upgraded to a CF set of legs!
Cheers Steve
shutterbugParticipantDidn’t think it was that much Steve! I think all tripods should have wheels so
you can drag them along! :lol:ossie13Participantshutterbug wrote:

munsterman28ParticipantThanks for the replies guys. Put this in the lense forum by accident.
Have been looking at the new aluminium 055XPRO3 which are the updated versions for the 055PROB’s (I think). Look like they would suit me.
Probably look at a ball head. Anyone heard anything about the Uniqball, Andy Rouses (UK based nature photographers) ball head??
