Nikon 105 DC

Hi Guys,
This lens never ceases to raise the curiosity of the portrait shooter in me – can anyone post some samples of their own with this lens. I’ve read everything I can get my hands on, on the web, and guess what I would find really helpful are peoples own experiences.
I would love the chance to have this lens for a day or two to play around with also, if anyone who has this lens is interested? Perhaps I could reciprocate with my 85 1.4 or other glass I have.
On another note, the 135 DC intrigues me also, although to a lesser extent purely due to the field of view on my DX Nikon,
Damien
randomwayMemberI think that an 85mm lens is better for portraits on a dx sensor camera. I use my 105/2 dc on a d200 for theatre photography, where the field of view is exactly what I like. It is too long if you want something else than headshots. I am not a portrait photographer, so my opinion might be useless.
I am going abroad next week, but we can arrange a meeting after that and you can try the lens if you wish.
damien.murphyParticipantNice shot, randomway! I have to say there is always something about mixed lighting that awakes the photographer in me.
I understand what you mean about focal length – I find myself more often reaching for a 50mm, than an 85/ 105 on DX, but this lens just seems to have something magical. The rendition of skin tones, and the possibilities offered with the DC feature have really caught my eye with this lens. If these live up to their reputation, I think I would have no other option than to make the focal length work for me!
One question though – have you had any focus issues with front/ back focus on your 105? Many reports on the web seem to complain of such issues, but as with the web you’re never sure how much salt to take that with :)
Appreciate the offer to try the lens – I will take you up on that, if you don’t mind. I jumped in rashly when I bought the 85 1.4, and don’t want to repeat with the 105! :)
Oh & enjoy your holidays!

randomwayMemberYes, I have focusing issues, but I couldn’t figure out yet if it’s the d200 or the lens. In these dark scenes my good old d200 has a bit of a trouble focusing anyway. I did test shots for myself in the room, close up, further away and at infinity, and it performed without a fault, so I guess it is just the screwdriver af system that’s not precise enough for shooting at f/2 in dim lighting… or it’s a user error, and I should go back to using compact cameras :)
You are right that you should try one first. It is a fine lens and one of my favourites, but it’s not magical… unless you hate using the 85/1.4 I would vote against buying another lens with a very similar focal length.
I will give you a shout when I am back.
damien.murphyParticipantLol.. I don’t think I could ever go back to compact cameras ..or rather the necessity to dig through menus for aperture/ iso, etc :)
I’ve also found the low-light focussing on the D200, a bit hit & miss with some lenses ..I guess I should really stop trying to take pictures in almost complete darkenss :)
Talk when you get back,
Damien
