C&C welcome
davemacParticipantMartin,
Really like the composition and the framing. The vignetting around the light post is also quite good.
Overall really well done.

nfl-fanParticipantMartin…
I’m going to tell you exactly what I think here and I don’t want you to take this the wrong way:
Whenever I see a new post from you in the Landscape section I know straight away what to expect. Long Exposure converted to Mono. It’s a style I like, but would never last on me, because after a while they lack the character to bring you back to look at them over and over again.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with that… and they are pretty decent images… but I’ve stopped commenting on them for the simple reason that it’s getting a bit repetitive. Maybe it’s just me… but after a while I really prefer to see some diversity.
I accept that some people want to stick to a single style… which is fair enough… but I don’t see what you’re getting out of putting these shots up for critique other than all the “oohs” and “ahs” from people. I’ve stopped posting the stuff that I know I’m supposedly fairly capable at (ie. seascapes) and tried to focus on getting better at other things. The pat’s on the back get tiring after a while and you’ll find yourself wanting a challenge.
I think it’s fair to say that you’ve pretty much nailed this particular style (or maybe there’s more to this style than I know about) and I’d really like to see you branching out a bit and showing us something of your other capabilities.
That sounds really damn harsh… and it’s not meant to be… what I’m trying to say is why not take your evident skills and challenge yourself.

Jees J really well said….
As he says, I know I haven’t posted much to look at but I will, your work is really good but I too see your name in the landscape section and know excatly what to expect. I am saying this as I would really liek to see more colour from you as I really admire your work.
mcmartinParticipantThanks for feedback… John and Marty, I’m not surprised about what you said, but that was I’ve been doing recently, I wanted to get good at this technique, and have been focused on it… I haven’t had many colourful opportunities to take colour shots, days i was out were dull, and gray…
I love challenges and that’s what I’ve been doing,
John you missed the only thing in your comment, I’ve been posting these shots to get some advise, and constructive critique, NOT oohs and aahs, I’m thinking about : “…after a while they lack the character to bring you back to look at them over and over again”This is what I’ve been expecting, suggestions to make photographs and my photography better, nothing else…
PeteMcDMemberI’ll go out on a limb here. I don’t post nearly as often as I should, so here goes.
I enjoy every post Martin puts up. Its a style that I love. And I’ve done some of this myself. Most likened to Michael Kenna. And there are some other well established ‘contemporary landscape’ photographers.
I find it refreshing that every shot is in the same style. It suggests that you are exploring the possibilities of this technique in depth, and probably learning subtle nuances that a less focused approach wouldn’t reveal. I’d imagine that by this stage, you have a pretty meaningful body of work, from many locations around Ireland. It would make for a pretty interesting exhibition. And I’d encourage you to look into that.
This shot for me doesn’t have the exquisite sense of balance in the composition that this minimalist style demands. The placement of the dominating foreground rock seems almost incidental. It is really competing with the lamp post and cable for attention- that is the real interest in this picture. I’d like to see this one stripped down even further- excluding the headland and foreground altogether. I don’t know if that would have been possible. I only just noticed the lobster pots.
So, maybe not one of your best. But I’d certainly encourage you to keep on with this. I’m still enjoying them, and I’m looking forward to seeing what more you come up with. I’m trying to get motivated to finish a project at Oxford Island, with a style in a similar vein. Your photographs keep inspiring me to get out and finish it.
Pete
mcmartinParticipantThanks Pete, title was bit of a joke, and stripping Bunbeg area of this lamp post, and further, the headland wouldn’t probably be a kindly taken gesture by Donegal authorities… or whole Ireland…
There are lot of small things that i would like to master, and as you can imagine I’m very far from that… I’m even further from exhibition, I’m not thinking about that… About Oxford Island, I was going either there or to Donegal last time…
I think Oxford Island has a lot of potential…As for minimalistic style i think i’m also very far from that… lack of necessary equipment, lens, filters, i only use sigma 10-20 with B&W 3.0 110 filter, or canon 50mm with few screw-in filters 3, and 2 stops stacked together…
and I hope to progress in this style, but still have to learn a lot… and get proper tripod, my last one has just retired, detaching on of it’s legs permanently…I really appreciate honest critique, cause it allows me to learn…
