Area La defense in Paris (night shot)

The last picture I took, before my battery went dead (I went to Paris without a spare battery!!!)
What a city!! The big white arche on the left is ‘La Grande Arche’, a modern remake of the ‘Arc d’triomph’
Taken with my new Tokina 12-24 (love this lens)
Bigger version here:http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3282/2939160878_d92de151dd_o.jpg
DeeboParticipantVery impressive shot, really like this. The large building made up of dots looks mega and what a reflection.
I would try some selective sharpening on the La Grande Arche and its reflection to finish the image, Shame about the battery.
Was in Paris during the 98 world cup but did not get too do much photography but I plan to go backDee
proachMemberThanks for comments dee, really is an amazing city for photography.
Can anyone tell me HOW to get comments on your pictures? Ive seen really average ones that get 2 pages of replies, and some stunning ones that get lucky with 1 or 2! (not saying mine is stunning ;) )
MartinOCParticipantI looked at this picture yesterday and didn’t comment. I think because it was very small is the main reason, I didn’t see the link to the larger image.
Also I had done my quota for the day and I thought your photo would need a bit of analysis. What I think..
It is exposed well, and nice colours, interesting subject. I like the strong perspective lines too. But there are issues..
The horizon doesn’t seem to be straight. At least the verticals on the Arch need sorting (PS has functions to do that).
Also the top of the building on the middle right is cropped.
But most important the composition – I think could be improved a lot by turning to the left. The Arch is the main eye catcher in the photos but it is shunted too much to the side, it should play a more central role.
In a place like La Defense with so much interesting stuff it is also tempting to get as much in as possible, but it is best to pick a single central theme (here it has to be the arch as it is by far the brightest thing) and stick it in somewhere probably in line with the rule of thirds.Thats what I think, I hope it helps.
Btw I used to work for SG (in the same group as the rogue trader) and spent a lot of time over at La Defense, their headquarters are behind and to the left of the arch. Lots of interesting buildings around there, but I think it is a hard place to photograph.
I can’t tell you how to get more comments, would like to know myself.
Martin
seanmcfotoMemberIf you put your battery in your pocket, and rubbed it in your hands, you’d have gotten a few more shots off.
dave100ParticipantLove it proach – I meant to get there before leaving on my recent weekend visit. Something important came up and I missed my chance. Some super opportunities there. Next time hopefully.
Great shot- well taken.
Reflections are superb !

PS…
On the subject of getting comments on your posts, I have noticed similar to what you have mentioned above. Most images posted by the same few people are always commented on yet some great images from newer people never are…Not sure what you need to do to get more critique really
proachMemberThanks for the nice comments daithi. Start to feel that it’s completely random weather you ll get comments or not.
It’s almost like only a certain type of photograph gets the comments :)
wirepicParticipantLovely shot. Looks good in the larger version also. Would agree with Martin on the main point of interest. I would probably have sacrificed the rightmost building. Mind you it looks like there could be something else on the left that might distract from the arch if you panned that way.
As regards comments, I agree, it seems to be totally random. Maybe put some inflammatory subject line or text at the top. But then maybe that might get you kicked off the forum!
Alan RossiterParticipantI find this type of image doesn’t quite set by boat afloat. Apart from composition there isn’t much more skill needed to produce it in my opinion. I did open the larger image to see what level of detail there was and it does look quite good but I did wonder what the white blob was about 3/4 ways up the main building. But having said that it does look quite colourful but unfortunately easily forgotten.
Re C&C – there’s a lot you can do to help yourself. One of the main things about feedback is that it’s a personal thing – you give feedback and someone else will reciprocate. I know you’ve got this one sussed as you do comment on other peoples shots but you’d be surprised on how many just post for the ego alone. Another is to embed, and make it a large image. The image above is a bit small and does require going through a link to see further…but most won’t go that far. Another is to allow the viewer feel comfortable replying. The lack of real name bugs me as I feel I’m talking to a shrouded individual, rather than a person. I’d rather talk to a Mick than a “mk88yahoo”.
Finally, don’t be put off by comments – it is one of the beter forums for real critique and not the Flickr-love that seems prevalent elsewhere. But it does help to get the basics right to allow others “help” you.
proachMemberThanks for the feedback Irishwonkafan (is that your real name ;)) , I appreciate your honest reply. I suppose that everyone will find different pictures interesting, composition/subject wise that is.
Cheers
