Fun in the Leaves

Another picture from the excellent course at Blackthorn at the weekend. Same girl again. I asked her to sit on the ground and throw the leaves up into the air. This is the best shot I got from 4

Well a few things spring to mind IMO
#1 the expression on the face of sitter is very bad ( eyes closed —looking up

    )
#2 sitter is in the center of shot ( not good ) rule of thumb use thirds
#3 try this type of shot again but have the sitter looking at you, tighter crop, try using thirds, and last but not least get someone else to drop the leaves into the shot.

sorry if you think im slating your best of 4 shot but you have to be cruel to be kind………..

    Hi Jody,
I think it’s potentially a good photo depending on what you were setting out to achieve. If you wanted to capture the movement and energy, you did that well. The girl isn’t exactly posing but I think it fits.
My principal concern is around the distracting bright spot in the background (at her left shoulder). You might be able to dim it a bit in post-processing.
At set up stage, it might work it it were directly behind her.
It would also help to add a bit of sharpening as it enhance the colours of the leaves a bit.
    Interesting concept though.

    Regards.

    Tom.

Wacker > #1 As Tom said. It was never meant to be a posed shot. I was trying to capture her having some fun. I told her to throw them up into the air and let them fall on her, and to look as if she was enjoying herself, so i wouldn’t change the facial expression personally.
#2 The shot only works with the model in the center. Rule of thirds doesn’t always work and this is a case in point. There are 2 subjects to this photo, her and the leaves falling at either side of her. If you were unbalance her to either side, it wouldn’t work at all.
Don’t worry about ‘slating’ as you put it. Its how we all learn, we just disagree here :)

Tom. I agree about the spot of bright light at her left shoulder. It is very distracting, i may try to do something with it in photoshop, though this was simply on a course, so i’m not hugely fussed to get this particular photo exactly right.
I also might try the sharpening. Bringing out the colours of the leaves wasn’t easy, and was what I really wanted to achieve, so if that works it would be great.

    thanks!

Sorry not trying to be bad here but
“I told her to throw them up into the air and let them fall on her, and to look as if she was enjoying herself, so i wouldn’t change the facial expression personally. “
this could be classed as posing as you gave the model specific instructions and especially telling her how to “look”

I think personally the composition is good but I would prefer to see this with the eyes open and a more natural smile.

I hope you dont take this as negativity as i do like the image.

You’re right Ben. I guess that is posing. What I was thinking was that i hadn’t got her in a still pose, if you know what I mean. These were ‘action’ poses for lack of a better term.

The smile is totally natural though
