Bit of guidance Nikon D90 OR D300

    Hi all,

I am planning to get a new camera towards the end of the year and have been doing a LOT of checking and research., and am now in a difficult position.

    I am upgrading from a Nikon D40 and am caught between the D90 (€899) and D300 (€1399).

From those in Use is the D300 worth the extra money for the Magnesium alloy, Weatherproofing and other bits?,

    OR

is the D90 worth looking at from the lightness, movie, and €500 in the pocket. etc…..

I have some Good Lenses which will be good crossover regardless of choice, both are DX Cameras. 18-200 3.5 – 5.6VR, 85mm 1.8, 105 2.8 Macro

    Thanks

    Steve

I would go for D300, aluminium and sealed body is what I’m looking for add 6 frames per second with built-in battery, 51 AF points, 14-bit image processing on Raw files and few more. You have to justify yourself if you need it.
I personally think it is good investment.
    So Yes for D300!

The D300 is worth it for the functionality, not just the weatherproofing etc.

You generally get what you pay for: D300 bit better still D700!

It all depends on your needs, im sure the D90 is a fantastic camera, and with the money you save you could get some good lenses. But the D300 has built up a huge reputation since its release and you cant argue with results. If you dont need all of what the D300 has to offer then go for D90, if you want something a bit more pro thenD300 it is

Checked out these cameras in town yesterday, I want one now. If I had the money I would go for the D300 as at some stage you will then want the D300 if you buy the D90.

i believe there is a hack to increase the FPS to 8 or 9 too.

To be honest if I had a D40, I would be looking at a used D80. It all depends what your needs are & what you shoot though.

I have a D200 & the main things I would miss if I changed to a D80/ D90 would be the mirror lock-up, the AF-ON button, and possibly the ability to meter with Nikon AI/ AIS/ Zeiss manual focus lens. The D200 is nice, but I find it a strain when around my neck after a while, and always want a lighter camera when travelling/ on walkabout.

All in all, if I had a D40 I would be hanging onto it, for use as a lighter cam to complement the D80/ D90/ D200/ D300 you’re considering adding.

By the way – don’t overlook the great value in used D200’s also. Only real-world drawback between a 200 & 300 for me was the slightly better noise performance.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. Appreciate it.

I will be heading into the City to ‘Try’ Bith out ing the coming Weeks

Based on everything, Most likely going to get D300, But I still not writing off the D90.

Ill Let you know the Outcome

Well I went with the D90 (Extra Cash will go on other bits)

    So far Delighted with choice.
Managed to get it for €780 Body only

I know there were trade offs, but without an income coming, the D300 is a tad too much

    Thanks for the Guidance

I think you made the right decision. You saved a lot of money and got a new camera with very good image quality, plus you can shoot video if you like… Have fun!
