does anyone on the forum have any experience of using the quantum chargers allowing for quick recycle of flash

I used them years ago. Greatest load of crap! Heavy, bulky and the cable from it to the flash always stopped working right. Get a 580ex (if your using canon) and some 2500 or higher NIMH batteries…so much better.

I use the 580Ex II and either NimH 2450mAh’s or some of the newer Energizer Ultimate AA batteries (which can often be purchased quite cheaply in Argos of all places!)

Although I must admit to being tempted by some of the recent Quantum stuff. I wonder if any one rents them and cables? Might be a good idea to get a feel before purchasing.

I got one mostly for my camera the 1d it eats batteries for fun quantum will shoot 750 raws with the 1d .

i got a second hand 1d2 it shoots about 1200 from one battery.

I have the 550 flash which does not recycle that fast quantum is good but bulky I used it all last year for rallying clipped to my belt break u ribs climbing over things.

Good for the flash over all if u flashing a lot .

Handy to have rechargeables I always found way too slow had 2800.

if u need fairley bang bang delay bang its good maybe a 580 would held

I’ve seen no mention of the Canon CP-E4 battery pack yet. Not much use of you’re not using a Canon flash, but if you are it’s possibly the best solution out there for Canon flash units. It’s small and compact and plugs directly into the high voltage socket of the flash. And at GBP 104.00 it’s pretty good value too, IMHO. You still need batteries in the flash to power the flash control.

So in reality there is no need to go to a shoot with “curly” phone wire hanging out of the back of your pants………… I am using a 430EX and wondered if there is much difference in the 430 and 580

friends who have the 580 tell me its the biss less blow out in the pics and recycle time is much faster

I must get one when the camera is paid for and I get my 28-80 2.8

I use the CP-E4 battery-pack with the 580EX and love it.

The recycling times are great, it’s also extremely compact and either can be attached to your belt or put into your front trouser pocket. It is also much cheaper than any Quantum solution.

I have a 580, and a quantum for when we’re really cooking. Crazy expensive, but if you want zippy re-cycle times, it’s the way to go. I’d a wedding in a sunny location (correct – it was’nt here!) and the quantum was the business as I had to fill flash all day due to the harsh sun. At times I was shooting pretty damn quick, so the re-cycle times did matter.
