Northern Lights Norway
-
johnhigParticipant
Was in Norway for a couple of weeks and managed once to get to see the northern lights, amazing to see. Weather was bad for the complete 2 weeks and this night was the only night that we had a remote chance or seeing them. We were out for about 5 hours with everything ready to go but it remained cloudy the whole time till I have packed up the camera and we were getting ready to head off when the sky cleared and the northern lights showed up. I had the camera set up with the right ISO, Noise Reduction turned on but had just put all my gear away so was a bit of a scramble to get the camera out setup tripod etc. And with cloud coming in I was in a rush and forgot to set the ISO and Noise reduction so the pictures are not as clear as they could have been. But ya live and learn, next time I will not make that mistake. Ohh and this is my first attempt and as it was a rush the composition in some is not the best. :D
Bloody planes flying around :(
MDCPhotographyParticipantClass Jonh…. this is one of my wishes in life, whats it like seeing them first hand
johnhigParticipantThey are class alright to see, gonna go back in Feb/March next year. They dance across the sky rotating etc, problem I found was you tend to watch them so much you can forget about the camera. I only had a 28mm F2.8 lens with me so didn’t get the wider shots I wanted. And these were not the best lights that night they can be allot brighter some nights.

WackerMembernice shots
where abouts in norway are they taken….?
also maybe next time go away from the city/town it will cut down on the orange light that you dont want ( go up the mountains )paddy
johnhigParticipantIt was outside Tromso, we didn’t have a car this time so couldn’t get around much. Allot of the trips to see the northern lights were not on when we got there. We tried to get out again but the weather didn’t cooperate at all. Next time I’m going to pre book with a guide that goes out further than where we went. The orange light from Tromso was a problem but I tried to make the best of the situation that I had at the time. Will know for next time.. Thanks for the comments.
If anyone has shot the northern lights before any help comments would be most helpfull. This was also my first time taking shots at night so any night shot hints would be helpfull.
Thanks
JohnNollaigParticipantMallachtParticipantThats perfect was in Norway last year (wrong time of year) so no sight.
Anyway was watching TV last night and Northern lights were on so me programme so I went into Ryanair for flights to Oslo and would you believe it there were return flights leaving 7/8 Jan returning 15/16 Jan for free just pay the taxes around €20 so after looking at your beautiful photos I’m even more tempted. Internal flights aren’t to bad if memory serves.
Northern Lights are one of my must see before I die.
Love the photos.johnhigParticipantThanks for the comments, on the flights to norway check which airport you would be flying into as there is 2 airports for Oslo. One is 45km from Oslo and you can get a airport express train to oslo from this airport. This costs about 379 kroner for 2 people so 44 euro. To get a taxi is 600 to 850 kroner so between 70 – 100 euro to Oslo. If you are getting a connecting flight check which are airport you would be flying into because allot of the internal flights go from the airport that is closer to Oslo.

Depends on were you are flying into and where your internal flight would be you might it might end up costing more trying to get from one air port to the other.
Seeing the Northern lights is worth it, it’s just something so different and amazing to see.
John
MallachtParticipantThanks John Certainly worth looking at
Last year was in camper and spent about a month there also Sweden and Finland but Norway was awsomely beasutifulshutterbugParticipantSo so envious, I would love to see them and Norway any pictures or programmes I
have seen on Norway look so beautiful. I am saving like mad to get there, hubby not
keen but this is something I really want to do so maybe a PI event would be in order?Great stuff!
MallachtParticipantjohnhigParticipantI took a train from Oslo to Trondheim and it was 7 hours. But the scenery on the way was something else. Also took the Flam railway to Myrdal then 4+ hours to Oslo. Was getting dark but was so high up that there was loads of snow. The landscape was amazing to see, I want to go back in March next year but will see.. Lucky thing is my wife is all on for it, she really liked Norway as did I.

The above was amazing, took allot of pictures more for me than to show because as you are moving down the fjords it’s hard to compose a shot. There is some much too see and you really don’t know what side of the boat you should be standing on.http://www.hurtigruten.com/en/default.aspx?side_id=421
Also took this boat from Trondheim to Bergen(Bergen Rains more than Ireland, Average 260 days a year) throught the fjords was also amazing, mind you I was up a 4am looking out the window as we were in a big storm and getting pretty bashed around the place. Was brillant.Next trip I’ll have to stop into Stravanger as that’s where my great grand mother is from.
Norway is expensive but it’s worth it. Around every turn every where you look it’s just so amazing.
JohnJMac-2006ParticipantGreat shots John – bet you’re glad you hadnt set off and hung around that extra few minutes – what is the light trail in the sky in the second pic?
johnhigParticipantIt’s an airplane, next time I’m there I’ll be taking a trip that goes further out from Tromso so no light pollution.
John
MallachtParticipantThis is a bit longwinded looking back, but if you have a few minutes
