Going to Disney next week – camera tips?

    Hello,

I am still busy learning about my camera fuji fine pix s9600. I am finding it tough but keep getting the odd moment of clarity though.

Just wondered if any one had the time to give me some tips for how best to….. then I can compare with my knowledege.

    * Taking pics at night of a moving parade???

    * Taking good indoor pics, my daughter with characters, in restaurants etc

I am really would like to try and not so auto, but at the same time I want to enjoy my holiday with out stressing .

One other quick question surely shots requiring slow shutter speed will not work well if there is some thing moving in the frame??????

I have a tripod ( a gorilla pod) and I know for any night time shots I must use this if it is a slow shutter speed.

You will have a great time and you are right about not stressing about the settings,
if there are shots you really do not want to mess up use auto, its no big deal you are
supposed to enjoy the experience and a good shot to record your memories are what
matter at the end of the day. Increasing the ISO for night shots will allow a faster shutter
speed and using a tripod is really a must, but saying that the night time parades are so well
lit that you may find the shutter is fast enough. You may find for the indoor shots that a bit
of fill flash might be necessary but again these places are very well lit and you may get away
    with it.

The main thing is to enjoy it. Aperture and shutter priority are a great stepping stone to
going manual, and also studying the settings that the camera uses on auto gives you a
good idea of what you should be aiming for, as an example if you take a shot on auto and
you like it but feel it needs a little more light look at the settings the camera used and increase
the aperture or lengthen the shutter speed, I found it kind of eased me into the manual mode,
though I still use auto quite a bit.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!!

I look forward to testing out my new knowledge, but as you said it is no big deal using auto, I don’t want to miss a precious moment whilst fiddling with my F stops!!

Set up a Flickr account today, but still trying to work out how to embed a pic from it on to here, would love to get some feedback!

I dont use Flickr so cant help there, I use the gallery on this site which is very easy to use,
just go into your personal gallery and click on upload, a page comes up that you fill in with
picture name etc and there is a browse facility which goes to your pictures on your computer
select the picture to upload and it arrives in your gallery, click on it and it opens up in a new
window highlight the address bar at the top of the picture and copy it, go back to the section
you want to upload it to ie landscape wildlife etc and select new topic, click on the img at the
top of the page and paste the link click on img again and submit, your pic should display ….
    ….clear as mud? :)

also for the night parade get there over 1 hour early and sit at the centre of the main square just beside the train station.
Face the main street leading right up to the big pink castle. This way the parade comes to you, no kids in your way if you sit on the kerb for 1 or 2 hours waiting – stay sitting as a family and you get to block off your ” space nicely” in advance.
great shots of the lit floats passing you bye – use a wide angle lens as they approach you so maybe from 12 or 17 to 55 as a lens would be ideal.

I didn’t change the shutter speed as the floats were moving , I changed exposure settings mainly to compensate

some restaraunts that characters visit only let u in to meet the characters if you are dining !

One good one if you have a good zoom lens is the stunt show in the film park – long queue but great action scenes to shoot with stunt bikes / cars exploding etc..

Lastly have the kids climb everything, rocks, wagons, statues, pirate ships – they make for the best shots after the fact.

To embed a picture from Flickr:

Next click on the “All Size” option along the top of the picture

Choose the size you want to submit, try and keep to 800 pixel along the longest side

Grab the photo’s URL:from below the picture

In your message body click tne Img box and past the URL and click the Img box again!!

Picture will be displayed in your post!!

Thank you so much for your ideas and help, it is much appreciated, I am sure you pro’s must get fed up of the newbies!!!

What was mentioned about the parade and only changing the exposure…that is a little unclear to me ( sorry  ) what settings would you have for moving floats?

We have a lunch booked in the Auberge De Cendrillon, my daughter will get to meet princesses there, also have evening charcter meals booked so plenty of chances for photo opportunities!!

Going to try to embed a photo now, probably in the nature section

Well all batteries charged and ready to go on Monday Morning. I am caught between wanting to practice my new found knowledge and not messing up

the family shots.!! Husband suggested taking a pic in Auto first before I mess with setting..maybe not such a bad idea!!

Mustn’t forget to get one with me in it!!

Any one have any last minute tips for every day shooting settings / modes / night time pics?
