It looks slightly tilted and perhaps a cw rotation might help. The tower itself also looks slightly washed out. That could be helped with an adjustment of the levels in PS. And if it was me I would crop the bits either side of the main rock as I don’t think they add anything to the pic.

Hope I’m not being too harsh!

Looks an impressive place and some PS work will help a lot.
Did you get to this by boat? and where is this?

    Cheers, Dee

Hi yes this is the Fastnet Lighthouse it is in South West Ireland . It is about half an hour out to sea from Baltimore West Cork.

Was a very choppy trip out an this was one of my last shots before I gave in to Sea sickness and put down the camera!

Havent had much experience in PS YET but some one feel free to have a go them selves!!!

The “shadow and highlights” function might be good here. When you open it first it has a strange default setting, but using the slider to bring down the highlights might bring more texture into it, and perhaps then see is you can get more shadow detail.
I don’t have Photoshop where I’m typing from, but if I remember I’ll try to mess about with it later and suggest something.
A shot worth trying to fix, nice composition.

Here is a couple of photos, I’m just back from a few beers with my collegues so not my best shot.. I have to head out again….
But first “shadow and highlights”, I brought down the highlights but it started to show a halo which is a giveaway for very altered photos.
So I eased back on that and used “Brightness/contrast” to bring the brightness down.

After that I used noise reduction software “noiseware professional” to take the noise out (a regular sharpener would be good too).

Just as an illustration here is a further adjustment, I used a film emulator, giving the effect of Velvia 50. (This is a separate add-in so this may not be of use to you, just want to show what is possible). This warms up the shot but it may does look a bit unnatural.
Have a look under under image->adjustments->filter->”photo filter” for a warming filter which may do a better or similar job here.

I hope this helps, I’ll be back tomorrow if you have other questions or wish me to stick to vanilla PS.

the horizon dosent look very staright, i like the post processing that some have posted as it dose appear washed out.

I know that this lighthouse is distant out – i was wondering if it would be better to convey that? what focal lenght is it at?

So I had another look at the photo this morning.
As some of the other say the horizon doees needs straightening.
A tip on that is to find the “ruler” tool in PS and draw a line along where you want straight (either horizontal or vertical) and then go to Image->adjustments->rotate canvas-> arbitrary…. and the angle you need to rotate should be pre-calculated for you, here about 0.8.

One issue with the photo is that it is quite noisy so it won’t take strong processing. I used noise-reduction software in these as mentioned above, but perhaps it is best not to worry too much about spending that money yet (although this software I do find very useful).

The photo seems over-exposed so bringing down the highlights is good. If you merely reduce the Brightness then the shadow part of the photo will lose detail.
The simple things that you should look at in Photoshop usually are (now I don’t have elements but I think these are there):
Shadow & Highlights (here I just darkened the highlights with 0% adjustments to the shadows)
    Contrast
    Sharpening (if needed)

These are the 3 things I use regularly, but not always.

In this case I also changed “Brightness”
Two other things to think about are Saturation (as to your taste), and in a shot like this perhaps a Warming Filter (in image->adjustments->photo filter).

I learned all this stuff and now I’m learning not to use it, to keep in minimal, that is the trick with PS.
    Nice shot,

    Many thanks Martin!!

I ventured in to Photo Shop last night for the first time really..my god its a bit scary. I am working on that photo in this months PS competition!!

I really love what you did with my shot, I may even enlarge it and hang it on my wall lol!!

Maybe you can be my PS guru!!!

Getting married next year and going to do all the processing of the pics ourselves , so I have to be spot on in PS by then!
