Could anyone recommend an online shop for buying DSLRs, with good service and prices???
Aside from ebay, http://www.simplyelectronics.com seem to have reasonable prices. They ship from Hong Kong though.
7dayshop in the Channel Islands (UK). Got my 40D and Canon 400 L USM from them. Saved a fortune even with sterling/euro difference. No warranty problems either.
Got some lenses and other misc equipment from 7dayshop.com and no problems – in fact
a very good service.I’ve also used http://www.komplett.ie and I see they now have a pick up point in dublin which
may save you on postage.Martin.

I hadnt noticed Komplett.ie ‘s camera range before. But im really tempted by their canon 40D body for 660euro.
Normally those type of sites arent very competitive in the camera department, but im impressed by their prices!

Sad to say, but you have to have a strong dislike of your money to buy in Ireland, at least where anything Canon is concerned. To be fair to the shops, they apparently have quite low margins on the gear – the Irish wholesale prices would seem to be substantially higher than elsewhere. Sigma gear is however generally very fairly priced in Ireland
That said, Gunns in Wexford St in Dublin would top my list. Conns and the Camera Exchange I’ve also found good.

Yes JMcL is absolutey correct; the costs in Ireland are too high.

To be honest thats not always the case, ie shops in Ireland being more expensive.
I’m mentioned this before, but my first DSLR was a D70 which I bought here in Cork, O’Leary or Denis McSweeney
can’t recall off hand. Anyhow, they were only €20 than warehouseexpress at the time!, so I bought it from then.
OK that is more expensive but I was able to walk away with the camera on the day and they did throw in a small camera
bag at the time.
More importantly was when 3 weeks later a mate put his CF card into it, bent 2-3 pins, I took it back into the shop.
They parcelled it up and sent it off for repair. It came was 2 weeks later, fixed at no cost. This wasn’t covered under the
warranty due to the nature of the breakage, but they spoke to Nikon and got it fixed for free.And yep €20 extra but I got great service when the proverbial hit the fan.
I think its worth looking around at the local shops, you might be surprised in what you find or what they’ll do for you.B&H or Calumet if you want service aswell. What mark says above seems to be right…the big cost difference comes when you start buying the expensive stuff!
I am surprised at some of these responses. The initil request was for information on shops that are good for price and service. Most of the replies focused on price. Mark has pointed out a good example of service and competitive pricing. It is not always the case that local shops can compete on price, but there are many examples in this forum of Irish shops providing excellent service. Certainly that is the challenge to them, given the price advantage of foreign (grey) imports.
I believe that good service should attract some form of price premium. In the past, we suffered from stores expecting us to pay the premium without providing the service! In Ireland (particualry the south) we are suffering from manufacturer price fixing that naturally turns our attention East and a high VAT rate.
Is price the overarching or sole selection criterion?
Is service secondary, unimportant or an acceptable risk (if avoided/not paid for)?
What can shops do to attract us more?
And what can the industry (in its broadest sense) do to take on the manufacturers – otehr than shop abroad?
I don’t know about your local shops BM, but if I went into my local asking for 1D mk3 or something, they’d look at me like I was asking for drugs or something. Forget about fixing the shutter unit if ever I needed it! Yes Dublin & Cork seem to have knowledgeable stores, but not all town shops are like that.
So for me price is usually the key….but working in the industry in the UK, I know where to get stuff serviced if needed….I know from seeing the titles on a lot of threads here not everyone is that way.
Everyone is different…some will shop around to the last euro in difference. Some will just go and pay whatever because that’s what the local shop charges….its the same with a lot of things nowadays.
