emma64Participant
Hi I’m looking to invest in a good quality printer, that will do me for sometime, what do people recommend? How much should I pay, or is that question as long as a piece of string?
PippateeMemberReally does depend on what you want to print …and how much you want to spend …
If you’re interested in high quality prnts up to A3, you wont go wrong with an
Epson R2880although they are quite expensive per print …

Thanks I heard thats a good one, so when you say expensive per print how much say for an 8×10?
Alan RossiterParticipantI use the Epson Stylus Photo R300 but this has been replaced by the Epson Stylus Photo R280. I find it useful for quick printing but if you consider to use genuine inks and genuine Epson paper you’re possibly looking at €2+ per print. If you go to http://www.foto.com you set almost A4 for €0.50 each. So if you want something for when you want up to A4 in a hurry it’s fine but if you want to do all your printing I can only bow to better knowledge from others.

whats the quality of print from http://www.fofo.com?
Alan RossiterParticipantI used them about 1 year ago and found that the images were very harsh…but that wasn’t their problem. I hadn’t a calibrated monitor and was using a 14″ laptop to process images. I’ve used them recently again and found the prints to be excellent. I selected matt paper and also ticked the box to stop any corrective measures taking place. Where I printed images on my own printer and compared with foto.com I found the detail was still in the foto.com images without the harsh colour of my own prints. The tones were subdued but it actually made the images more paletable. This may be dependant on the subject of course but I was happy with them. I got 11 8″x12″ for just over €10 and delivered in a week. The postage funnily enough goes up quite sharply with the increased images even though they come in the same type box.

Agreed, I’ve used foto.com and photobox.ie for prints and if your monitor is not calibrated, you’re taking quite a chance getting shots over the net …mind you, photobox is excellent quality and value ..
I like to print my own, I have an epson r2400 and, although the cost per a4 is about €2, I can reprint if needed, ensuring I get what I want …

sounds good I’ve used photobox and was quite happy but the colours were a little too subdued. I work from a laptop too so am wondering can I calibrate its screen? this is an area I’m clueless in. I thought you could only calibrate your screen for your own printer and not if printing was done elsewhere?? Jow do i calibrate?

well you’re doing better than i could ever get with a r1800 or a r2400-using genuine inks and epson paper at a3+ almost always worked out about 5 euro a print.any of the a3plus printers are fine although while the epsons give stunning looking prints they are expensive to run and colour management was a pain- having said that i currently run a hp 130nr designjet and using genuine stuff costs me about 2 euros per a1 print, and if you find a secondhand one its as cheap as a new a3 printer although you need a big space in a room.
