Otter – Wicklow Town

This guy has been around for a couple months now. We See him frequently enough fishing or eating.
This is the first time I’ve seen him with a long enough lens to get any half decent shots.
Looks like he’s been in a scrap or two….I wonder what would have done that to it’s nose and eye?
Caught with 70-200 VR vr on d300. He doesn’t seem overly shy, I got within 15 feet of him I’d say.
God I am so jealous. I have never even seen an otter in the flesh. Well done. He certainly looks like he has been fighting. Great work. Go back and get some more.

John, this is the 3rd Saturday in a row I’ve seen the otter. I’m pretty sure if you wanted to see an otter in the flesh you’d have a good chance with this fella.
I was walking past with my kids today when I saw him sitting on a perch eating a 3-4 foot eel. I went back to my house and got the camera, then me and the kids went back. He was still there. While I was taking these photos my little girl nearly lost her mind because a swan tried to get her soft toy, then my son lost his mind because another swan was “looking him in the eye”. I tried to ignore my parenting responsibilities for as long as I could, but really only had 2 mins for these photos. I’m sure a dedicated wildlife photog could get some excellent shots.
Does anyone know what the status is of otters in Ireland? I know the UK wildlife shows seem to get quite excited about them…are they a rare sight in Ireland too?
Fairly rare I would say, in the forty years I have lived in Wicklow I have seen an otter twice
and one of those was unfortuantely a road kill. I have heard about the “Wicklow” otters
and am assuming that you spied it along the river? It is so exciting to see them in the flesh,
and despite his injuries he seems in fine fettle. What time of the day did you see him?

I’ve seen him (I’ve somehow determined it’s male) in several locations, but mainly between the two bridges along the Vartry. Today he was eating the eel literally at the foot of the car bridge, that’s how I got the top view photo. Most of the other times i’ve seen him he was more towards the pedestrian bridge where the ducks and swans gather. That’s where the rest of the photos where taken. The times I’ve seen him vary, but mostly late morning early afternoon. I don’t know if that’s because of his schedule or mine. I did assume he would be more likely to be around with the tide coming in, but it was nearly low tide when these where taken today.
Love the otter photos. I’ve been chasing one myself but he/she is very elusive.

Lovely sharp images. Never seen an otter in Ireland.
