Beautiful shot Si… love the lighting..
Is there detail in the darker portions of the shot? I can’t see it on my monitor..but it does tend to be a little dark.
Recently had a conversation with a guy in my camera club about profile shots and he reckoned you should always have a little of the far side of the face showing? I had shown him a profile shot similar to this…with a less beautiful model though ;-)
So be interested to hear your opinion?
Robbie
8)AllinthemindParticipantHi Robbie,
There is a small amount of detail in the darker areas, which I turned down to give the focus to the profile.
If you ever hear anyone in a camera club tell you what “should” or “Always” be the case, my advice would be to ignore them :) There are some general ideas that seem to work more often than not however, like:
on angled headshots, keep the nose inside the far cheek, else the nose becomes prominent in the shot etc. Here’s a duotone of the same shot.
RobMemberLove the duotone here Si, the colour one being possibly a little warm for my
personal taste…Clever composition too, the dual diagonals of the arm from the corner and the
stepping bright sections through the centre. It’s almost like a fan spreading into
the bottom left corner. Works beautifully…Rob.
BallymanParticipantThis is excellent. I prefer the colour version. The light in it really shows off her red hair and I think the vibrance of it is lost in the duo.
PeteTheBlokeMemberLovely work. The colour is my preferred one, I think.
I have a twelve inch pianist – I met a leprechaun who granted me a
wish. If only I’d had the foresight to ask for a beautiful Russian one….RobMemberciaranParticipantGorgeous lighting on her, but the shot doesn’t work for me because she’s not engaging with the piano. I think if her fingers were on the keys or she was looking down on it, then it would work really well. As it is here, there are two distinct subjects in the shot, with no communication between either.

She’s looking at the conductor awaiting her cue…… :) I was using the lines on the piano to point at her face, the existence of the piano is secondary (to me). It was the intensity of the rapport to the conductor that I liked. Thanks for commenting mate.

In defence of ‘camera club people’ :D I think the above statement should read , “If you ever hear anyone…. saying what “should” or “always” be the case, my advice would be to ignore them.”
Not Pete the blokeParticipantWith regard to the image itself, I can see something on the far side of her chest – like a reflection, or cloning gone wrong (which I know it isn’t btw). I just find that part quite distracting because I don’t know what causes it to look ‘odd.’
Looks like a ‘nearly’ shot to me…ie nearly an exceptional shot, but not quite. :DAllinthemindParticipantRossco wrote:

Not Pete the blokeParticipantCan’t be! I can spot those from any angle, any distance, any perspective….
Or maybe I’m getting old and losing my touch…….

GrahamBParticipantI really like this shot. The second posting works really well.
I have to disagree with a previous comment that said her hands should be on the
keys. To me that would seem a tad generic and somewhat predictable.
In my opinion it works really well the way it is and had has a very unique and honest
feel to it.
