Aspiring wedding photographer from Rathmines

I’m Karl Martini. I’m currently a hobbyist but I am looking to become a professional wedding photographer. To this end I am looking to spend the comming wedding season assisting for established wedding photographers. I have a little wedding experience already. All I ask in exchange is some mentoring and the opportunity to take some shots myself occasionally. I am also willing to assist in the non-wedding field. I’m sure the knowledge will be useful and I am aware that assistants rarely (if ever) get to take photographs in the studio or on location.
I’m 35, clean-cut, polite and well-spoken.
Any advice from pros would also be appreciated. I’ve been doing a good deal of research and I seem to tick the boxes. Firstly I enjoy photography immensely, I’m told I’m somewhat talented (you be the judge), I have some flexability with when I can work, I don’t have to give up the day job until I get established which could take years, I can afford the significant investment (€10,000?) in pro gear and backup bodies and lenses with a bit of saving. I’ve been self employed since 2002 so I know about business, marketing, collecting money, tax, etc.
I’m particularly interested to hear about what pitfalls to expect and the career paths taken by pros to arrive at where they are now.
Many thanks,
Karl
