Drummer extraordinaire Mark Grist onstage at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre
last Sunday afternoon…Part of a promotional shoot for Meinl Cymbals in Germany…
Rob.
lousyParticipantjb7ParticipantVery good Rob-
looks like you weren’t stuck for a bit of light-Is this another commission?
j
RobMemberThanks Pat and Joseph, pleased you like it…
Not stuck for light at all as can see. Very much a staged shot, staged to look
like a performance – the kit fully miked on a riser, lights on, etc. – but of course
the theatre was completely empty. Two light set-up along with the stage lights.
The important part of this shot is the logo on the underside of the cymbals…Yes, another commission, a small one, but maybe worth a couple of referrals…
Rob.
lousyParticipantjb7ParticipantstasberMemberVery nice Rob. Ditto the above with the light, composition, esp placement of the drummer and sticks, and angle. I like the tonality too. As it’s a staged commission my only (tiny) niggle would have been to turn the right most cymbal a touch (or a lot) so that the mike doesn’t interfere with the logo as the logo in this case would be important. (I did a similar faux pas over the weekend photographing some bands in the 2fm School of Rock competition – had them all at my disposal and didn’t notice that I placed one lad directly in front of another and of course being kids they dare not move if you’ve told them to stand somewhere. Ah well.) Good photo tho, Rob.
mgstParticipantRobMemberThank you Stas and Mick. I’ll try to include a few more, some colour, when I get
a chance to process the rest of the shoot…Rob.
ExpresbroParticipantGreat shot Rob… I imagine the Cymbal people are very happy with it.
Did you set up the lighting yourself or was that someone else’s brief?
JodyParticipantReally nice tones Rob. I love how the symbols came out, the flash has really brought them to life, especially in the B&W conversion.
RobMemberThanks Robbie and Jody…
Robbie, the lighting is my own set up. All the stage lights were coming from directly above,
so I lit Mark from one side with a large softbox about 4 feet above his head angled down 45 degrees
and another off to his right side but out in front at head height and powered down a couple of stops.
As previously mentioned, I had to show the logo, so lighting the underside of the cymbals was pretty
important, but direct light would have caused serious burnout on the metal…Rob.
