Light meters

AlfamaleParticipant
Hi, does anyone have any advice re light meters? I am looking to buy a half-decent light meter and have a max of about £150 to spend (although could stretch this if the dog’s danglies light meter was a couple of £ more … :) ). I want to use it for low-light photography (dawn, dusk and night) outside and preferably to help with flash exposure as I tend to make a right mess of it! I use exlusively film at the moment but will probably buy a digi at some point, so need something that will work with film and digital.
So, I’m thinking that I need an ambient/flash meter, right?
Was looking at Polaris Digital Meter (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1007261) and Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1007261). If I “stretched” my budget to about £190 are the Polaris Dual 5 Meter or the Gossen Digipro F worth the extra money? Any other suggestions for my needs?
Thanks in advance, Alfa[/url]
Not Pete the blokeParticipantThis one is the dog’s bollox for the money :

AlfamaleParticipantstcstcMemberideally you want something with a spot meter
the 358 doesnt have one ast standard, but you can buy an attachment but its a lot of cash again
better off looking for a SH one with spot
AlfamaleParticipantciaranParticipantI have the Sekonic 758 – all the functionality you could ever need, but costs an arm and a leg :?
AlfamaleParticipantI was drooling over that one … but as you say, very expensive and WAY outside my budget no matter how I rationalize it! I think the Polaris Dual 5 is looking pretty good at the moment as it also includes a 5deg spot meter. The Sekonic Flash Master L-358 was recommended also and looks excellent – I will have to see how much the optional spot metering attachments cost …

Did you get the calibration target?
Arm and a leg is right, but to omit the target from the package is just plain mean…
and they want $100 for it too-j
darraghParticipantI bought a Kenko KFM-2100 which is Minolta Flash Meter VI rebranded for £150 from eBay – http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=320326531556 for £150
It has a one degree spot meter which is what I need for landscape work but it should work perfectly in a studio as wellDarragh
PandybellyParticipantI use the Sekonic L-358 and find it an excellent meter for ambient and flash. Keep an eye on eBay for the spot attachment. I have seen them sell for $120 or thereabouts.
AlfamaleParticipantAlfamaleParticipantor a Kenko KFM-2100 … ho hum, usual inability to decide coupled with typical spec creep and limited budget!
SeoirseMemberAnother vote here for the Sekonic L-358. I have the 1 degree spot and it works a treat. Bought it from a guy on another forum in mint condition.
I never realised how hit and miss my exposures were until I got this meter. Well worth it.
SeoirseMemberHere’s a link to a Sekonic L358 going for a good price
