Studios in Dublin…

Thought I might post this up to see if anyone knows anything. Basically I need to try and get a studio put together. I have all necessary equipment and just need to find a space as such in Dublin. Measurement wise 11′ H x 20′ L x 14′ W would suffice, but anything larger would be great. Is it best off just going to real estate agencies in the city and see if they have anywhere. Just Dublin has RIDICULOUSLY over-priced photographic studios to rent and in conversation with a few friends of mine, we all agreed that it’s due to this price and the lack of studios in Dublin, that there aren’t many studio photographers and studio photographers are slowly dying off.
randomwayMemberThere are ads coming up from time to time on Visual Artists Ireland ( http://www.visualartists.ie/index.html ). They have a newsletter and you can also find offers navigating through the links from their portal.
I am not sure if a collective studio is something you would be interested in. I was searching for spaces myself and found that in Dublin city centre renting a space on your own is almost impossible, unless you have a built up business and high income.
Just an example: http://www.pallasstudios.org/pallasstudios/studios/studios.htm
Poulet et Lait…MemberYup already sent email to VAI to try get into next newsletter on Tuesday. Well I know another photographer who is ready to move into somewhere too (and another photographer who is seriously thinking about it come January). Just I know some places (not naming names) that charge (per day) from €700 to €400 to €200 for basically an empty room, the average being about €370-400, which is far too high.
plainoldmeMemberWhy dont you look into using the Dublin Camera Club studio?
I was in it before a few times modelling for a friend. It’s not the best equipment wise, but if you have your own equipment there’s nothing stopping you bringing it and the room is pretty decent in size etc.
randomwayMemberplainoldmeMemberWell if you cant get another place its as good as you’ll get, to be fair. Obviously finding an individual place would be a better option, but it was just an alternative suggestion if desperately needed..

Bear in mind that Dublin also has ridiculously over-priced property prices and rents also. A studio to rent is more than just an empty room. Whoever is renting it out is most likely paying a mortgage or rent on that property. Obviously the demand isn’t there for them to rent it out every day and this has to be factored into the studio rental fee.
As for studio photographers dying off, I think you’ll find that most commercial and portrait photographers have their own private studios and for those that are moving away from studios I think it has more to do with a change in demand for studio portraits and a shift towards location portraits. It also has to do with photographers reducing their overheads, a sensible decision in these difficult financial times we live in.
I think your best approach would be to form some sort of collective or cooperative and see what sort of commercial space is available in the suburbs. Once set up you could then look at renting out the studio as well in order to recoup some of the costs associated with it. Of course, this all depends on what you want to use it for.
LoGillParticipantOn a similar vein I looked at this place – you might check it out if you haven’t already ?
