Rite ive being doing alot of head scratching on what lens to get next for my nikon D90 as all i have is an 18-105mm lens and i want a good cheap and reliable lens for candid shots and some sports shots.
so ive come to the conclusion that the nikon 80-200mm f2.8 is my best bet.cheap, reliable and it has a nice focal range.

so can anyone who has one give me some info on it and what is their view on it?
and is anyone thinking of sell theirs??

    Cheers

Excellent lens, very sharp, well built, fast. Love it.

    You won’t regret the purchase.

Not sure its what you’d call cheap unless you’re comparing to the 70-200VR or a 200mm prime etc… :)

There are a few variations of that lens around, so be careful when buying.

I can heartily recommend the 80-200 f2.8 AF-D model. I just traded one in to Bermingham Cameras.

The AF-D has a slightly older auto focus system that is marginally slower than the HSM models – but it really delivers tack-sharp results.

The 80mm end on DX body will mean taking a step or two back from your subject, but if it’s candid you’re after that shouldn’t be a problem.

I only used mine for one sporting event (my nephew at half time in the RDS during a Leinster match last month), but on a monopod it gave me results that were certainly good enough for newspaper work.

Take a look at the model I traded in to Berminghams, he will let you stick it on your Nikon and get a feel for it – just remember it has a lot of glass and it’s a heavy piece of hardware.

You should save about a thousand euro going for something like this compared to the VR models.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Joey;
Will be looking for one of these later in the year also.

I have seen one on Adverts for €650. May be of interest to you

I dont have the cash at the moment and will be looking mid year.

    Best of luck

Very sharp lens and great for shallow focus portraits with pleasingly blurry background.
On a DX camera you effectively are getting 300mm at the long end, which is handy.
I got a kenko 1.4 teleconverter for mine, giving 420mm on a DX camera, which is a nice lenght for wildlife etc. You do lose a stop of light (so f4) and quality suffers a little, but lets you get shots you otherwise couldn’t.

It is quite a big/heavy lens, which makes it harder to use as a walk around lens. It would be very useful for street candids though.

Definitely a lens you want in your arsenal and one which will get regular use.

Hi folks should have informed you but i picked up one from a friend who only used it a handfull of times before he got a fixed 300mm and at a very reasonable price.

Like dmg said it is quite heavy but it has excellent build quality.(feels like it would last you a life time). Very sharp, very quick and nice background blur at f2.8

Steve you wont regret the purchase as you know you’ll have bought a good lens once you get one.

    again an amazing lens

I have the Sigma 70-300 4.5/5.6 APO Macro. And I like the results I get from it. OK the obvious disadvantage is that its no where near as fast as the one you are interested in but the price is massively different. See ebay. http://cgi.ebay.ie/New-Sigma-70-300mm-70-300-f4-5-6-APO-Macro-Nikon-fit-UK_W0QQitemZ270315850391QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraLensesFilters_JN?hash=item270315850391&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

I was lucky enough to pick up a 2nd hand 80-200 2.8 AF-D lens a few months ago for €450. Fantastic. It’s sharp, fast AF, built like a tank (so a bit heavy) and even at 2.8 its almost perfect. Some slight, ever so slight distortion at 200mm that is so easily fixed in PS (if there are horizontal lines where it can be noticed).

I shot this at 200mm and cropped the foreground a little. It is a really amazing quality, cheap alternative to the 70-200 VR lens.

Buy it if you get the chance!
