Well its been 7 hours now and no symptoms as yet.
No seriously………i decided to give them up as i will need all the help i can get when i have my op soon,
and when i recover will be able to do all the things i wanted to do, like climb up a mountain.
Watch out cathal..    .
Sean
nfl-fanParticipantI wish you all the best Sean.
Dish-washers and drugs aside… cigarettes (which are a drug of course) are another “spawn of satan” as BTP would put it.

BMParticipantWell done, Sean. Your life just improved – both quality and life expectancy.
I stopped 8 years ago (cold turkey) after smoking for over 20 years. I read Alan Carr’s book and remember 2 things:
1. Nicotine only stays in the body for 48 hours. After that, the craving is no longer physical, it’s “in the head”. So, you’ve done a lot of the hard work already.
2. It suits the tobacco companies for us to think that is is hard/impossible to give up smoking. It’s not impossible and it does get easier as time goes on (not harder, as tehy would like us to believe). Don’t let those bst****s win!
I now am a confirmed non-smoker and regret ever having started. When I meet a smoker now, I cringe at the thought that I used to smell like that! My health has greatly improved, I don’t get horrible colds and cheast infections and I am no longer out of breath doing simple things! I set a better example for my kids and have more energy to play with them.
Keep it up Sean. You will find a remarkable amount of support from friends and family. Once you know in yourself that it’s the right thing to do, you will find all the strength you need.
Remember, you have done a lot of the hard work already. The first week is dreadful and then it eases up. Stay away from activities and locations that you associate with smoking. That’s part of breaking the habit. And that’s all it is now: habit.
Keep us up to date on progress. And when you have doubts or feel like giving in, remember all of the work you have done to date – and how much longer you will live as a result. Have no doubts that you will live longer, teh cravings will be a distant painful memory and your quality of life will improve imeasurably.
Well done!
randomwayMemberI never understood people getting addicted to cigarettes. I smoke a couple of cigars or a pipe with some nice danish tobacco every once and then, sometimes I just need it, but I go for months not thinking about it. Good quality tobaccos can give the same joy as good food or wine, but the cigarettes are all like junk food… not good for you, but you still love it.
emjayParticipantYep, stopped smoking a few years ago myself.
Best decision I ever made and only wished I did it a lot sooner
I think smoking is probably 90% a “thing” in your headAdvice? everybody is different. I used nicotine patches for the first three weeks. It gave me a little help along in the critical times but don’t swop one dependency for another!
Also don’t think about it as “giving up something” or loosing something
Think more positively how lucky you are that you have made a wonderful change in your lifestyle that will improve your health and well being immeasurably.
Good luck :)kenhParticipantGreat job Sean,
I quit about 12 years ag after smoking 30 Major a day for 25 years!
When you are feeling particularly “challenged” just look forward the next few minutes, and get through
them – after a while you will find yourself looking further forward!!Best of Luck – and feel free to PM us if you think it might help.
plainoldmeMemberGood job!! I quit before Christmas, and it’s doing my head in. Especially now there’s exam pressure. Good job I’v eno money to buy any right now
Good luck man, and best of luck with that op. too :)
lousyParticipantBest of luck with both of these Sean.
I know you were fairly bad on the fags because any time I looked at you on the Saltees trip you were either smoking or eating a sambo :lol:Hope everything works out ok for you.
Pat
DenverDollParticipantYay for you Sean!
Would echo what Randomway says :D
Then again I am smokaphobic…
Very best of luck!

cathaldParticipantDoes this mean if we head away on thursday I cant smoke in your car?
Feck I might take the van.jb7ParticipantBMParticipantMarkKeymasterAndyLParticipantGood man yerself! Been off em about 7 years now, and I cant stand the thought of one now. The smell, the cost the unspeakable things they do to your body… The best thing is being able to go out for a night and not have to wash all your clothes the next day cos they smell like an ashtray.
If your friends smoke, tell them all you are off them. Avoid smokers (out to the smoking area for the craic), they will offer you one and that temptation can be strong. Save the cash you would have spent on the smokes and buy your next bit of nice shiny photographic lovliness with it! If you smoked while you did other things (Beer, morning coffee, driving, after meals etc) then break those associations as quickly as possible.
It gets easier. To the point you couldn’t smoke without puking. Enjoy your new found sense of taste and smell too…
sean1098MemberWow……..thanks for all the replys people. I feel even more determined now.
cathal………no smoking in my car any more.
