Never shot a wedding, I’ve been asked tentatively if I’d like to be main photographer for a collegues wedding in October. Would like to give it a try, wondering for preparation am I better off doing a course, finding a tog to let me assist, or both?

    Thoughts please?

Be a 2nd shooter for somebody, it’ll give you a feel for the day and where you should be at certain times of the ceremony. Nothing like shooting during a real wedding, and you can help out and learn about family formals and how to go about the whole day…that’s if the main photographer you’re helping is good

Not exactly what you are looking for but gives a good idea what approach a photograph takes for the day of the wedding.

I would also suggest that you check out the ‘All Things Photography’ or ATP site

    http://www.all-things-photography.com/

They have lots of tips to offer as well – If you look at the menu on the left hand side of the sheet, you will see a special section for Weddings.

    Best of luck.

My two cents worth would be to make sure you ask someone on the bride and grooms side who maybe the side key players who they want photos of. there maybe an aunt, cousin that is important to that person and they want them in the formals and informal shots, nobody would know that except for maybe the bride. that way you cover yourself and not get ask……where are the photos of aunt girty……………..

    good luck

    Hi,

I am based in Donabate so if you want to give me a shout next week we could meet up and I can give you a few pointers on shooting weddings. You are off to a good start as I have found that building a good rapport with the wedding couple, and them being relaxed & happy with you on the day is 50% of the work.

It doesn’t matter how good a photographer you are, if the couple are not relaxed with you, the photos will show it.

Drop me a pm if you want to have a chat.

Could not agree more with Kevin on that. You must also get the guests and families on your side – they can make or break you !

go as many times as you can as a wing man.

it is an art and the more nervous you are about “their’/ YOUR big day the better you will preform.

    but it is not impossible.
two SLR’s , (Borrow a back up if you havnt got one) have a location visit the day before and sort out your settings and write down image ideas and your half way there.

luck is when when opportunity meets preparation.
