In case of emergencies

cathaldParticipant
Do any of you guys and dolls carry anything extra in case of emergencies
I know a lot of folk go wandering in hills and along deserted coastline but (god forbid)
something did happen what do you have in your kit bag
Myself I normally have a mars bar and water and a torch wind-up and battery type
Mobile phone, but not always within coverage,a pen knife Oh and extra fags :lol:joe_elwayParticipantPeteTheBlokeMemberOrange survival sack
Whistle(And I’ve used both – but it wasn’t much fun)
Edit:
Map
Compass
GPSjessthespringerParticipantWould really depend on where I was going Cathal, and maybe who I was with.
Mobile ph is a must, and maybe, if you think there is a chance of being out of range, then the sensible thing would be to tell someone where you are going.
Extra clothes and plenty of extra sports bars (better than a mars bar, they have a slower release of glucose so your less likely to crash from the sugar) or something like that, the kind of thing you can just put in your bag and forget about it. They would be the big two I think, I’ve had mild hypothermia before and it’s not great, and prob worse for whoever you are with, because it can happen quite slowly and can be hard to notice sometimes. The same goes for food, somebody who is really hungry and a couple of hours away from anywhere can be a real handful to deal with.
I noticed nobody has mentioned checking the weather forecast or tide tables, I’m always amazed at the amount of people, even some with plenty experience in the outdoors just completely over look this point.
A map and a compass are only helpful if you know how to use them.
I don’t carry a first aid kit much, but when I do, it has a couple of medium dressings and triangular bandages and a few wee bits of homemade dressings, which are very light and easy to carry.
The survival sack is good to have too, even if you only ever use it to protect yourself from wet grass and midges.
cathaldParticipantI also have a compass in my kit but that is only used for sunset/rise if i am in a strange place
I have a tide book in the van to check tides before i head off somewhere for seascapes
I suppose a first aid kit would be a good idea in case of cuts and grazesSeaviewParticipantYou never mentioned the Weather Cathald, but I normally don’t check the forecast either as it is usually bad and I get a nice surprise if I don’t have to put on all my waterproof gear.
Dave.
MarkKeymasterSeveral years ago when I wanted to start hill walking I bought some gear.
Never did much of the hill walking so never used it.Got myself:
Compass
Survival blanket
Whistle
First aid kit
Firestick (very cool ;) )BMParticipantSeaviewParticipantI saw you hill walking Mark and you done a fine job it in typical Irish weather.
Dave.
aoluainParticipantBMParticipantSeaviewParticipantThe most important thing I have picked up to date to put in my bag is a small piece of foam form a camping mat about the size of a4 page, so when you sit down for lunch you don’t get a wet ass, that’s my tip for today.
Dave.
randomwayMemberI am surprised, no one has mentioned condoms…
…they can make good containers for water if placed inside a sock for when you don’t have a plastic bottle ;)

I was going too, but didn’t. They make good sterile dressings too.
