ANYONE KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO GET 2 LENSES TO WORK ON MY CANON 400 DIGITAL
I had them for my 35mm canon and was told they would be ok, but they won’t work
It has been suggested that I need to get a chip or something done

Sad but true. EOS system does not give you full compatibility. Old lenses may not work with new cameras. That is known issue. So forget about old lenses and buy something new. Should be cheaper than installing new chips in old lenses. Probably the quality will be better too. Of course it depends what lenses you have, because sometimes good lenses for analog cameras give poor results with digital ones.

    Hi Brian,

were these used on EOS film cameras?

    what brand are they?

Piotr, Old lenses going back up to 20 years can produce equal or better resolution than modern
lenses actually. Before digital came about manufacturers concentrated mostly on trying to
get the maximum LPM from their glass, whereas up to recently they were concentration on
producing a drip feed system with a new body with a few extra MP’s EVERY YEAR.

I think what is happening now is that with the surge in Megapixels towards 20mp manufacturers and
users are finding that their lenses which were develloped over the last few years are not producing
enough resolution for the bigger sensors. Canon in particular are producing MK II lenses now.

Thanks for the replies and info
The lenses are only 5yrs old and they work ok in manual
    The 2 lenses concerned are
    1 20-200 aspherical if sigma
    2 170-500 1:5-6.3 sigma

I would like to get them to work in auto
    THANKS

    Hi Brian,

Yea they can be RE-CHIPPED to work on digital.

Hahnel in Cork look after sigmas interests here.
    their # is 023-41606.

I had a sigma lens converted about 3 years ago maybe more
    but it cost €52.00.

I was dealing with a guy called Liam.

Worth ringing for a price anyway.

I’d ask sigma first. That lenses are not so old (170-500 can be bought new). Maybe without such operation they could be fixed.
I read several stories about such problems like this one, never had one though. Canon tries to make life of sigma users more difficult and that is a known fact so maybe the solution is also known. Polish branch of sigma does lens calibration to make it working with particular body. So maybe sigma could fix those lenses too.

aoluain – I have some old lenses and I love them. I am nikon user and within this system there are some lenses which are not good with digital bodies, whereas they were working well with 35mm cameras. But that is a different story.
