Digital Camera Magazine Hacked

Possibly a bit funny, maybe a bit scary. My girlfriend bought me a subscription to Digital Camera Magazine last year and because of that I get emails about upcoming issues. I just received this email :-)

An administrator of Digital Camera Magazine Community has sent the following email
to all users in the Everyone forum group.

    Sent From: admin
    Subject: Attention faggots

Your retarded administrators don’t understand that repairing damage is meaningless unless you first fix the problem. This forum is now 4chan’s bitch, and we shall do with it as we please. Since your administrators are completely incompetent we have decided to ban them, as well as change their passwords; we’re sure you won’t mind. We went easy on you this first time, prepare for the worst.

On top of this the website is unavailable (http://www.dcmag.co.uk/) so seems genuine. On the face of it this seems funny but a bit worrying because I know my girlfriend paid for the subscription on-line with a credit card. Lets hope they don’t store them on their server.

They might use a bulletin board like this one Mark uses. They are very prone to
being cracked if not updated regularly.

That sounds like a threat. Better get round to updating it soon Mark ;-)

I got that email this morning too but luckily I didn’t use any credit card details to get on the mailing list. Hopefully “4chan” has had his/her fun and the administrators will get everything up and running again soon. If the credit card details are hacked they will have a PR nightmare on their hands but hopefully this won’t be the case.

Yeah, you’ve got to stay on top of updates for forum s/w and things like WordPress. MS might get the headlines (e.g. people who didn’t patch last October getting slammed by Conficker olds-chool style) but 3rd party s/w gets hit too.

Doubly important if you’re on a shared services web server because you’re at risk from the other sites on that server. For example, that particular site is on W2003 server with IIS6. If they like a a certain hoster I know in Dublin, they’ll run hundreds if not thousands of sites in a single application pool. That means one security boundary for lots of sites. Want to store your customer data and credit card details in there :?:

The Digital Camera Magazine site is back up and running and they have posted this message. Looks like your credit card will be ok fig.

Welcome back to the site. You may be aware that we recently closed dcmag.co.uk following a malicious attack from unknown users. These users accessed an administration interface that allowed them to send an offensive email to our registered users. The DCMag team apologises for any offence this may have caused you.

Subscribers to the print magazines Digital Camera and Digital Camera World do not have their banking details and subscriber information held on this site. Your site registration passwords remain encrypted, but if you would like to change your password please contact us.

That’s good then. You’d think they’d at least send an apology email instead of a tiny little paragraph lost on the site. Ah well.
