Ryanair – carry on luggage
-
CianMcLiamParticipant
Hi folks, just wondering if there’s any jet-setters out there that have been using Ryanair recently. I hear they have become very strict about carry on luggage and check larger bags with those frames at every gate. I have a Lowepro Computrekker AW (not the plus version) which seems to fit the size restrictions but will be overweight with the laptop in the back. I was told by someone that knows a Ryanair groundcrew member who says they don’t weigh bags often but will check size. Any experiences?
Cheers!
MartinParticipantThey normally check the size by visual inspection, i have not seen them weigh carry on luggage yet. People could be waiting around the corner holding things for people. When they have there stuff checked in then they simply walk back around the corner and put the items back in their bags….
M
stcstcMemberjust take the laptop out and carry it to checkin etc
i quite often do that as well as take camera with big lens round neck, as soon as checked in i put them back in the bag
PixelleMemberI’m travelling tomorrow so can give an update.
I have a wheelie carry-on that is only 2cm over but I’m not chancing it, I don’t want to have to walk to Kerry. :( :evil:There’s some fresh info here too. It looks as if they are coming down hard on infringements.

randomwayMemberI often carried on my Mini Trekker AW fully loaded (~10kg) without anyone asking how much it weighs… They usually made me open it though, just to make sure that the films I carried were not plutonium capsules. A laptop bag is allowed in addition to your carry on bag… plus, they will ask you to take out the laptop anyways… it always have to be x-rayed separately.
FrankCParticipantI travelled with them about 2 weeks ago.
They weighed my carry-on bag – first time ever for this.I think they are definitely getting a bit more strict about the carry-on luggage.
PixelleMemberI went through Stanstead in 2007. They weighed the carry-on at 9.8k. I had a lens in each pocket as they wouldn’t fit in the bag. Close one.
The excess wouldn’t break the bank, I suppose, but it really goes against the grain to hand over any more money to MR.
jb7ParticipantCooksterParticipantWeigh it at home. If it’s close to the limit you should be ok. If it is more than half a kilo over just stick the laptop or whatever in a carrier bag, or put your camera and big lens over your shoulder.
Some of the check in crew are cool and others go by the letter of the law. Once they weigh your bag and make up their mind, its too late to redistribute the weight. better off to do it in advance:wink:
CianMcLiamParticipantThanks for the suggestions, think you’re onto a winner there JB, I gotta have one of those vests! Will have to use the exact pose and expression at the check in desk though of course..
I weighed the bag and it’s 10.021Kg fully loaded but without the laptop. Think I’ll have a flash in every pocket and batteries in my socks! Dont know if you’d get away with carrying the camera and large lens, seems anything carried on your person will have to fit in one bag.shutterbugParticipantrandomway wrote:

Dont know about travelling from Ireland but when I was returning from UK with a laptop bag and carryon I was stopped and told
only one piece of hand luggage, but you are right they do ask you to take out the laptop anyway so you are well within your
rights to carry itemjayParticipantI traveled with Ryanair just before Christmas (Derry -Stansted) and I was just on the limit
(I weighed my bag on bathroom scales before leaving home)During the flight there were lots of fellow passengers who had pieces of baggage that were clearly over size and probably over weight
and the staff seemed cool enough. I didn’t observe people being stopped or hassled by Ryanair staff. If you do online check in, the first place you will meet Ryanair staff now is when boarding the plane at the gate.
However I read this recently
http://www.herald.ie/national-news/ryanair-to-fine-own-passengers-over-bags-1608821.html
so perhaps they have become more strict on how they apply their policy.
I generally make sure that my carry on bag meets dimensions allowed.
If it is over weight, I wear a jacket with good pockets and put a lens or two in my pockets during check in or boarding.
PixelleMemberUpdate – Yesterday in Dublin I checked in at the Ryanair desk where they weighed my carryon too.
They then attached a long strip label saying “carryon” to everyones carryon, so there could be no doubt that one only was allowed per person. There’s definitely a clamp-down.
But there’s hope…… I was wearing a bumbag and this they ignored. So on the way back tomorrow I’ll hang the camera round my neck and see what happens
Mr.HParticipantThe other thing to note here is that Aer-lingus are clamping down on excess baggage in checked-in baggage. Went to london recently and put my tripod in my case. Weighed it and it was ‘close enough’ and would historically gone through without trouble. Was 2 kg over and I got charged €30 for it… ouch. manged to work around it for the trip back which is just as well as €60 would have been made it an expensive trip for my tripod.. it could have got a seat for that.
No real complaints…. rules are rules and it is there in the T’s & C’s, but just be aware that they are applying the rules more stringently these days.
Gary
PixelleMemberOK, if you want to fly Ryanair just leave from Farranfore. :D
They not only didn’t weigh the carry-on they also ignored the camera and bunbag.
Other passengers also had laptop-sized bags in addition to their cases. And there were chairs for when you want to put your boots back on
[while trying to keep one eye on your laptop
and the other on your D80.]
