Was at the Westmeath Galway game also. Damien, it was cold!! Praise the Lord for under armour.
Found the testing with my old Nikon body. Shutter speed never really getting past 500 with a 300mm 2.8 lens. Here’s to better days both on the weather and Westmeath GAA front! If anyone has secrets on shooting in poor light I’d love to hear them. A shutter speed of 1/500 should be fine with a 300mm lens. Mind you, those conditions don’t look too dark. Try shooting under floodlights.
All you can do is shoot at max aperture ( f/2.8 ) and bump up your ISO.
Personally, I never under expose. But, I shoot raw, so that gives me a little extra scope.
From looking at those images – there are many times I’d be delighted to have that amount of light. :?
damiendParticipantHi John was that you beside the right hand goal of the main stand?? see the guy with the HUGE lens wonder who he was shooting for, he was busy sending them off at half time,
yeah it was cold and very dark the pics dont show just how dull it was.
I dont have a f2.8 to open up to, so it was 5.6 for me I was shooting at 1600 and they where underexposed , . I thought westmeath where poor then again im a Dub , but it was a poor game.
pm me if you wish we can meet at the next home game or Athlone when the footie kicks back off againJohnOBParticipantThanks for the feedback Paul, your right about the light not being too bad but I’m used to better conditions for day matches and I dont like going past 800/1000 ISO as my images get pretty grainy (shooting with the old Nikon D200). I used the curves in photoshop after to brighten them up. I like to get my images as sharp as possible and I found that if there was any lateral movement on the lens I was coming up short!
I know all about poor light at night. The 6 nations under 20 rugby international have been held in Athlone over the last couple of years and the light at Dubarry Park are a good test! My expectations are allot less for those matches I guess. From your website it doesnt look like you ever find the night matches to difficult. Some great results from games. Well done..Damien, I was the guy either on the left hand side of the goal on the apartment end or along the line on the terrace side. I was moving a bit to get some action. I usually like to stay on the end and capture the action coming towards me but the game on Sunday was tight and there was allot of mistakes made in the middle which meant the ends probably didnt see as much as usual! The guy in the corner was Paul Mohan from Sportfile. He was shooting with a 600mm F4. Some piece of gear, he could have coverd the Roscommon Offaly game in Kiltoom at the same time :)
If your at the next Westmeath home game I’m sure we’ll meet up. Not sure when it is but I like to make all the home matches. You did very well with your images shooting at 5.6! Would love to be able to shoot at 1600…./John

Looks like you have a bad copy of the 300, I would be willing to take it off your hands :D

It certainly is a matter of knowing your gear and feeling comfortable with it. I use a Canon 40D and a 1D MkIII. I know I can shoot with the 1D MkIII at ISO 1600 without much problem (or grain). The 40D isn’t nearly as good.
I can certainly relate to keeping the ISO down.
It’s about finding that comfort area – high enough shutter speed and low enough ISO.
I always aim for a shutter speed of 1/450 and work from there. Different venues have different light too, and it can be dramatic. I think Tolka Park is probably the worst light I’ve had to shoot under for a game.
Anyway, a challenge is always good. 8)
