I’m gonna cry! Dropped my Sigma 24-70 f2.8

…and there are bits floating about inside that look suspiciously like aperture blades. I’m an eejit. I’ve got the buckled shattered UV filter ring off it, and the front is still round, though there is a tiny mark on the glass. It auto focuses, and the zoon turns but there is an ominous rattle.

Anyone had major surgery done to a sigma lens? What are repair costs like, is it 50/50 that I’ll be buying a new lens?

So learn my lesson folks. If you weren’t the last one to touch your bag, check it is zipped up before you sling it onto your shoulder. I’m off for a good cry.

Same thing happened me on Cape Clear last summer but thankfully the UV filter took the brunt and the lens was OK.

I hope you can get it repaired easily, do let us know how you get on.

PS: I think Hahnel in Bandon might be the Sigma people in Ireland…..

I’ve smashed up a couple of lenses in the past 6 months.

I dropped a 70-200 f4 and just smashed the protective filter I had on there. But it got dinged and wouldn’t screw off, so it is still on there, minus the glass. the lens survived thankfully.

I also dropped my Sigma 18-50 2.8 onto tarmac. It broke in half. Well, the lens body broke off of the lens mount. It’s currently being repaired by Sigma UK. £80 for a replacement lens barrel, mount and calibration. They were very speedy getting the quote back to me. I posted the lens on Tues, and had the quote back in the post on Thursday.

I imagine they should be able to do some surgery on yours. £80 seems to be a standard price for major repairs with Sigma.

Gutted. You’d only just got that lens.

Thanks guys for the replies, as I’m north of the border, its off to Sigma UK in the morning.
I will ensure I have UV protectors on all my lens from now on. Oh, and I’ll check my bag is zipped closed properly too…

Buy good ones (multi-coated => expensive) or use petal hood. It gives much better protection.

I have one of these lenses that I don’t use and have been considering selling it. Interested?

    Edit: Canon fit.

I know your pain! a few days ago I was going a wedding for a friend. I dropped my beloved with Sigma 24-70 2.8, on a Nikon D200 with grip and speedlight in front of about 200 open mouthed guests. from about chest level! The lens was all buckled; the grip popped open and shed its batteries. the screen protector shattered. and the speelight popped open and shed batteries. I nearly openly wept! but the damage was fairly limited. the grip seems to have taken the brunt if the impact, a big gash down the back and a broken battery clamp – But still works no problem! Same with the speedlight. put the batteries back works fine! The Nikon D200 didn’t miss a beat, carried on working no problem. even the lens was working until I tried to zoom. Luckily I wasn’t too far from Bandon, so the next day I dropped the lens off at Hanhel. They quoted me €145 (ex VAT) and three weeks to have the lens back. Liam (from Hanhel) explained that the plastic barrel was designed to be weaker than the connection to the camera. makes sense. Anyway I was delighted to hear that I don’t have to bid farewell to my favorite lens. Happy days. I’ve sent stuff to them before and I can highly recommend those guys…

On a positive note, the guests and couple were fairly impressed when I commandeered the groom’s 18-135mm Nikkor and continued shooting. Not bad for a first wedding experience…

Follow on to my dropping of my beloved Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 – They quoted me €145 + Vat to fix it, and that it would take three weeks, maybe more depending on when the part would come in from Japan… Well they were wrong. It ended up costing €100 + Vat, and took less than 1 Week. Those guys in Hahnel in Bandon are great! I cannot recommend them highly enough!
