50mm issue!!

Just put my 50mm 1.8 on the nikon d80 for the first time in ages, and unless i set it to f22 on the aperture ring, there’s an error message coming up on the display saying “F-EE”.
Anyone know what’s wrong cause I seem to have misplaced my manuals! It’s probably something obvious but I’m too slow right now to figure it out

Sounds like the lens and camera are not totally compatable and have a communication issue with each other.
I think I saw a simular problem with someone else about a year back and it was that the lens and camera did not match up.

I can’t understand that Gerry I mean it is the corresponding Nikon lens for the camera and has been used before with all settings and has worked perfectly. It seems to a be a sudden thing I have had it over a year now…

That is strange for sure. I dont know Nikon lenses but I do remember that Olympus lenses had a firmware installed that had to be upgraded seperate from the camera body firmware. I wonder if there is firmware in the lens that has gone bad ?

I think I will be bringing it into Conns tomorrow and asking some questions. It was bought online however via ebay so chances of returning it are slim to none. Thanks for the help

Just set the aperture to f/22 (or whichever is the slowest aperture) on the aperture ring and then slide the little lock (to the locked position). I’m sure the link that SteveD has given you points you to exactly this explanation. It’s written in your camera manual, btw :)

No need to bring it to Conns now :) You can use that time to shoot some more pictures instead :)

Reminds me of my film SLR camera days – I had (still have actually) a Nikon FA with an LCD in the viewfinder that displayed shutter speed or aperture or warnings. As Mike says, if the lens wasn’t set to the the minimum aperture [in any of the automatic modes like A, S or P] then the ‘FEE’ warning would flash up. Once set to the min aperture all was well.

The effect it had was that the camera would still function but you’d be limited in available aperture range. For the lens and body to be coupled correctly, the lens should be set to the min aperture. In those days it was all about levers and mechanisms working together, don’t know what the impact is in today’s cameras, plus I don’t use a Nikon DSLR so don’t know the low down on it, though Mike suggests having a look through the manual.

I had a look through a few of them – generally people writing paragraphs about “I’ve got this problem” and people writing paragraphs about their experiences of it “yeah I get that too” etc.. Usual Googlage

    Good luck!!

Yep, no issue, just keep it on f22 and off you go :)
