:D
cathaldParticipantstcstcMemberbe careful with cheap drives, they WILL fail at some point, and using 2 or 3 or 30 you buy at the same time means they all gonna fail aroundd the same time
the seagate enterprise drives are designed for server envioroments and to run 24/7. even if it cost a little more, it would be worth buying them and some decent external cases
Mick451Participantthe stigMemberyou dont have anything backed up…….unless its replicated in at least THREE places.
ie
original HD
Backup HD
and another mediacause thats the way it is !
brownieParticipantThanks for all the answers everyone…plenty to mull
over here…im getting into the photography on a more

get from PI members is much appreciated.Noel Browne.

Back up images on more than one drive too, if possible.
If one fails you won’t have a heart attack.I’m pretty paranoid about having an external go belly up – it hasn’t happened to me yet, although it has happened to herself once and disc recovery isn’t cheap.
External drives will probably fail at some point, and so will DVDs and CDs.
Best to have at least one back up system in place.I agree completely, can’t emphasise enough the importance of at least having one complete back-up of everything. A friend had his external 500gb hard drive crash before Christmas and it just died completely. A crowd in Phibsboro quoted him three grand to recover his files. The economics of that says enough, without even considering the trauma of losing your photographs.
Don’t buy one, buy two!nfl-fanParticipantAlright Noel…
I’ve one of these
Western Digital Elements 1TB
http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=420463And one of these
Seagate FreeAgent 1TB USB2.0
http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=363064Plus an older Iomega drive.
Of the 3 the Seagate would be my pick simply because it comes with some very useful s/w for backing up your hard-drive. It’s easy to use, can be scheduled and only backs up data that has changed since the last back up. The backup process runs really fast.
The other two drives are fine, but they didn’t come with any software. The Seagate s/w only recognizes the Seagate drive. You can obviously get free 3rd party s/w but I’ve yet to find anything quite as good as the Seagate HD/SW combo.
If I had it back I’d probably have bought 3 Seagate models.
