Camera advice for a newbie?
-
BriansmurphParticipant
Ok so i only have a middle of the road digital camera.
Did me fine for the occasional weddings/parties etc, but now that i have decided to take an active interest in photography i need a better one, more suitable to the task.
Now ok, i’m going to sound like a total knobhead in my descriptions but i dont know the terms or jargon for the different elements, so i will use my own style of descriptions :p
First off, the price. Unfortunatly due to the current big R word everyone hates, i wouldnt be too flush with cash, and seein as its my virgin effort in camera purchasing, i don’t want to blow a months wages to find im crap at it etc etc, so lets keep it on the cheaper scale please :)
Function :
Well mainly, i want it to be able to, when i shoot a picture, to take like…. 20? in quick succession. I dont know a better way to describe it but im sure ye get my drift.
I’m mainly hoping to take landscapes, but also i would like to be able to take good photos of moving objects (racing greyhounds, soccer matchs etc) so it would need to be able to produce the right end product when taking the moving object, as opposed to my digicam, which looks like someone got abstract with a paintbrush :/
Hopefully, digital in some manner or form, so transfer to laptop is easy + easy delete and retake of photos, as im sure my original efforts will be atrocious for some time and i dont want to be buying rolls of film every other day.
So maybe i’m asking a lot, but yeah, thats kinda what i want lol
Any help, links etc would be majorly appreciated. I’m going to give it a month or two before i purchase, as i have a few loose ends to tie up before having the expendable cash available. Thanks in advance,
Brian :)
markst33ParticipantHi Brian.
It would be helpful if you gave us some idea of your budget. Also aim at the second hand market it will help keep the price down but still make a decent SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera well within your reach. An SLR is one where you can change the lenses to suit your requirements. I have a Nikon D50 which is brilliant. I have never come across a bad review for it and I have never had a problem with it. It has been discontinued by Nikon now but you can still find them for sale on ebay.

If this is beyond your budget let us know and I will see what else is available.
larry davidParticipantAny recommendation’s for a below 500e dslr suitable for portrait photography??
RaVMember^ the thing that would make it suitable for portrait photography is the lens. So that requirement doesnt rule out any particular DSLRS.
To keep the price down and make sure you get the best camera for the price, id have a look at the second hand market.
Keep an eye on the local buy/sell papers. or ebays great if your happy to use it.Continuous shooting is the phrase your looking for, for taking quick photos straight after each other. Alot of the cheaper consumer DSLR’s dont have huge buffers so thats something to keep an eye out for. eg. Canon 400D – Continuous: 3.0 fps up to 27 JPEG / 10 RAW frames – so after 10Raw images the camera slows down as it transfers the images in the buffer to the memory card.
I would have a look for any second hand canon 30D’s or even the 20Ds. they are older but there specs are good, and you should be able to find them for good prices 2nd hand
larry davidParticipantThanks for that, i bit the bullet and got a 450d from argos for 549e,
Now the hard part…tryin to figure this bloody thing outIOPParticipantlarry david wrote:

Now the hard part…tryin to figure this bloody thing outThe good news is that the 450D comes with Free Training provided by the Institute of Photography (even with Eos cameras bought from Argos). We just had our Dublin training session yesterday (Sat 27th June) and the next one is coming up in Cork on the 11th of July. The next training session in Dublin is expected around September/October. Just keep your receipt and collection number,

larry davidParticipantJanine87ParticipantHiya,
I thought I am not opening a new topic as this is the exact thing im looking for! :)
I have a Kodak Easyshare Z710. But I think that one is not good enough. The shutter takes too long. So I want to get a new one. I just dont know which one will be the best one like. My swedish friend has got a Canon one iwth 2 extra objects to put on. It should be not that expensive either. I had a look on http://www.pixmania.ie but I cant find the right one. Maybe you could help me. It would be a big release.
GizzoParticipantmy 2 cents.
I looked your flickr, and I think what you need is a DSLR.
get yourself something like a Canon 1000D or a 450D (no matter the brand, also nikon olympus pentax are fine) and a 50mm f1.8.
that will keep you happy for a while, and you start playing/learning :)Janine87ParticipantCool thanks a lot for your advise Gizzo! :) I was looking at the Canon 450 D! ;)
GizzoParticipant;) just bear in mind that the kit lens will be limiting you in the near future. and it’s difficult to sell.
grab a 50mm and you’ll keep it for years. always in the bag.Janine87ParticipantSheldonParticipantJanine87ParticipantSheldon wrote:

That camera looks very complicated.
I see you are from Malahide or at least you have a camera club there. I used to live in Malahide for 2 years! :D

I wonder have we met! Our shop has been open for about 7 years opposite where Frank McGowans Furniture shop used to be. The Nikon D60 and the Canons all function in a similar fashion and they can be as complicated or as simple as you choose. The only reason that I mentioned the D60 was that I put a post up as a teaser in the buy and sell section to see how quickly it would sell.
