Ancient Ringfort – GrianĂ¡n of Aileach

I spent all morning in the library digging out old archaeological reports about cavemen of the north coast. I’ll be starting to pull a new chapter together soon which should have plenty of grisly bits for you.

All that reading put me in the mood for some fresh air so I decided to nip up to the GrianĂ¡n of Aileach for some archaeological inspiration.

Fisheye is a good idea for ringforts! love the colours of the first shot (hdr?). sun beams are nice but so sharp, wondering….
like the compo of the second image…i have a mystical feeling about it – well done!
    now we are two who study the same ( ;

    Andy,
    I’d echo Carrigmans sentiments,
For what it’s worth No.1 is one of the better shots I’ve seen here for a long time.

    Thanks folks,

Well spotted Madeleine. These are both fisheye images. The problem with using my fisheye lens is that I can’t use my graduate filters so I have use the HDR method instead.

In the second image the fisheye lens has curved the hill somewhat to give an exaggerated feeling of isolation of the fort standing above the surrounds. I kept the composition as simple as possible to help with that too.

Cheers John and Paul, glad you liked the first one.

    Two great shots Andy
I have been to the fort a good few times and always struggled to get a decent shot
I think the fisheye has done well here
Did you go crawling around any of the tunnels

First one’s great Andy. I’ve never managed to get something I’m entirely happy with up there – there’s too much available, and trying to figure out what to exclude is the hard part! As Cathal says, I think our fearless Captain Caveman should find out for definite where the tunnels go (there were all sorts of tales, over to Burt castle for one, in which case the Irish government should hire the lads that dug that to build the metro). I remember crawling about 10ft into one of them when I was about 8 or so and crawling right back out of it again at double speed!

    Cheers John,

The passages were locked up the day I was there.

Here’s an interesting website that has a plan of the passageways and includes JAVA panoramas of the interiors. Look out for the pack of playing cards that is right at the end of one of the passages. Creepy place to be playing cards.

They certainly don’t go down to Burt. in fact they don’t even go round the whole fort. But I did hear a story of a souterrain nearby that has become a bit of a local legend. It may have been filled in.
