Wedding without a flash….

Hi all,
I’m very interesting in those kind of photo >it show those photo arent using flash as “mark griffin” type.
As you can see a real nice contract on the body, dress, etc
Im trying to understand or how to do it without a flash. When I did those shot of my friend, i end up getting a “kinda grey” looking. So do I have to put on manual and then to focus the bright side of the face and get the shutter speed right then move away then click?
Or…..Is it done in lightroom/photoshop to get a high contract?
OR…….?? any advice? Thanks for taking your time to read this and hope to hear from you…

RobMemberHi Johnny,
Very difficult to tell from the images you’ve linked to as all the metadata has been stripped
form both (and on account of the size) how they were lit, flash or not…Best advice I can give you on exposing properly for whites is to treat it as if you were shooting
in the snow – use spot metering to find the brightest spot on the dress, then overexpose by a
couple of stops and the dress won’t be grey anymore…AllinthemindParticipantRob wrote:

johnnycorcoranParticipant121FOTOParticipanti dont think you can get the nice white in the dress without blowing the skin texture. the photo looks to me like it has been post-processed. use a mask..increase the levels and then paint over the dress ( or if you use Nikon+capture nx place a selection point on the dress and desaturate+increase luminosity)
BrianParticipantfreshphotoParticipantwhy dont you just ask the photographer how he took them ? the worst he can do is tell u to f***k off or maybe he will tell you !
stephenmurphyMemberLooks like this was done using the lamp from a video camera. As its a constant light you can illuminate the center profile and illiminate the need for a camera flash which can sometimes lead to over exposure. Ive seen this become very popular with wedding photography and some famous weding photographers around the world now use this method.
121FOTOParticipantI still believe is a PS job :) shoot through umbrella + burn / vignette afterwards in PS. If you look at the mirror frame you can see some harsh shadows. Makes me think that there was a light source somewhere…certainly not a window because the shadows would have been more diffuse.
