First scans from Holga
-
ExpresbroParticipant
Just scanned my first colour negs from my new Holga tonight. Still getting to grips with the V500, so I’ve probably made plenty of mistakes with the scanning, but overall am quite happy with how they turned out.
No world beating shots or anything, but at least they are more or less in focus. Was a bit surprised at the comparitive lack of vignetting..lots of softness in the corners..but no major vignetting that I can see..maybe I should pull out the mask completely next time.
Anyway..pretty much as is from the camera, just added some contrast and a simple white frame in PS and that’s it.
My very first Holga shot..well..the second..cos I skipped the first when I rolled on the film too far ;-)
The next couple were taken in the Phoenix Park
and finally two taken in my MIL’s back garden… :-)
Oh ..the film used in these was Fujicolour PRO400H.
Thanks for watching ;-)

MartinOCParticipantThese are nice Rob, especially from a first roll.
The detail in the sky in #1 on such a dull day shows it exposing well. And the focus and depth of field field in #4 is great. The holga adds such bleakness to landscapes, it seems to be a great atmosphere generator, you have to get out into the countryside.
The last one seem to be a self-portrait
Martin
ExpresbroParticipantCheers Martin :-)
Yes, that last one is indeed a kind of self portrait. I was surprised at the amount of detail in that shot. It’s not so obvious at the size posted (and bless your eyesight for picking up on it) but at a larger resolution you can quite clearly make me out, Holga in hand, in Yvonne’s sunglasses).
These were really just test shots, so I wasn’t particularly looking for great subjects Holga wise, so I’ll definitely try and find more suitable Holga subjects.
I’ve jut got back my first roll of 35mm from Illfords and am disappointed with them compared to the Holga, probably because I was expecting more from the FM2n.
This film lark is not easy
MartinOCParticipantFilm is sure not easy at first.
When I got my film camera, a bessa, the first few rolls were very bad. I would bring out my digital camera just in case there was something cool to shoot, so that I would know I would get the shot.
I gradually figured out what I could shoot and how I could shoot. I think it is giving me a deeper understanding of the photography lark, forced me to think.I would like to get a Holga except that I’m on a camera buying moratorium. :(
Martin
ExpresbroParticipantWell I definitely learned one or two things from my first roll of 35mm anyway.
Not to use a lens with no Aperture ring (I used my Nikkor 12-24mm) on a manual film camera as it just selects the smallest aperture and all the shots taken with it came out way underexposed, even though it looks fine through the viewfinder.
Also it’s a lot easier to get the focus wrong when shooting manually, and of course you wont know until you get the negs/prints back.
As for the Holga Martin, sure where you are you can probably buy one for less than 20 euro…!! Go on..go mad…hehe!!
jb7ParticipantWell done Robbie-
plenty to study there…Also it’s a lot easier to get the focus wrong when shooting manually, and of course you wont know until you get the negs/prints back.
Not always true-
I usually know by the time I go to take the next shot-Hope you’ve thrown the lens cap away already…
joseph
ExpresbroParticipantHaha!! I never throw anything away Joseph… Just ask my wife ;-)
One question though..
How do I get the square format negs? I thought the mask I left in would give me 6×6 negs..but I obviously misread the instructions.
The most annoying part of the whole process was getting the damn negatives into the 120 holder on the V500. It was really fidgety, I’m thinking I probably loaded them wrong or something.
The 35mm holder was much easier.
aoluainParticipantNice set of images Robbie!
I particularly like #’s 2&4, for me they are good
lofi subjects . . .it seems there is a TYPE of subject that really suits this type of photography.
cant wait for me own.
nice one
Alan
jb7ParticipantI thought these were from a 35mm-
they look more like 2×3 than 645…Just take out the mask-
I’m sure it doesn’t look square…ExpresbroParticipantThanks Alan…you’ll enjoy it when you get it… :-)
Joseph..nope..these are from 120 and they aren’t cropped. I thought the mask was square..but I wouldn’t bet my life on it.. ;-) Well obviously since these are not square.
It came with 2 masks…I’ll have to check as soon as I finish the roll that’s in there now. I know this was the one that gives you 12 shots.
The developing was fairly reasonable too.. just €3 for the roll (12 shots) from The Camera Centre in Blanch.
jb7Participantnow you’re confusing me-
12 on 120 makes square pictures-just take out the mask entirely,
you don’t need it at all for 6×6-ExpresbroParticipant*L* Well I’m confusing myself too. I set the little switch to 12 and I’m pretty sure the mask I put in had 6×6 stamped on the side of it.
Yet I end up with rectangular shots..Hmm…
Weird huh!!?
I’ll just finish off the roll this evening and have a look then.

Hi Robbie,
I understand that while Epson make nice flat bed scanners – their holders are not great. That’s why a lot of dedicated film scanners (i.e photograhers) choose to replace their epson masks with this:http://www.betterscanning.com/scanning/models/v500.html
Lots of comments if you google it.
MartinOCParticipantThanks for the link Seoirse, I have the same scanner (and the same problem). I might get me one of those.
Robbie, after a lot of hassle I bought a tweezers for negatives from a photography shop. These make it a lot easier, I find, to get the negs into the scanner holder.
M
ExpresbroParticipantCheers Seoirse… bit on the expensive side with shipping and all..but then again..if it works and improves the scan quality..I suppose it’s worth it.
Martin..was wondering about holding the negs too.is very hard to get your fingers all over them when trying to get them in the holder. Do you ue white cotton gloves or do you bother when you use the tweezers? Are they just regular plastic tweezers?
Oh and to be a real pain, do you have any handy tips for settings on the scanner..have you you found any settings better than others?
I’ve found the Ice thing didn’t do that great a job of removing dust marks..and dust and fluff seems to be totally attracted to the scanner glass… :D
