Im strongly considering purchasing a prime telephoto lense. I shoot mainly wildlife and some sports. I currently use a Canon 100-400mm mostly but would love upgrade at this stage. I use a Canon 7d MK I and would also hope to upgrade to the MK II to keep the crop sensor for reach.
The reviews for the Canon 300mm F2.8 seem to be for the most part, amazing. Id also look to put a convertor on it a lot of the time for wildlife and by all accounts its still amazing with the convertor on.
Whats peoples experiences with the Canon? I saw a Sigma 300mm F2.8 (almost half the price) in action over the weekend and was quite impressed with the results. Anyone any views on alternatives to the Canon??
The other option is to go for something bigger than a 300mm but I believe this overs me the most versatility, escpecially if I can add a convertor to the 300mm with no real loss of quality.
Munsterman, to state the obvious it really comes down to cost. If you go the cheap route now I can only imagine that in time to come you’ll probably end up buying the Canon lens. Maybe your best bet would be to pickup a second hand Canon lens for the around the same money as the sigma. That said, I think Gortan60 on here uses a sigma lens and is very happy with it. He has a lot of images in the sports section, maybe you could send him a pm for advice.
I had the Sigma 300mm 2.8 (Nikon version) and now have the Nikon 300mm 2.8, I can honestly
say that was very little difference between the two, I used them both with 2x convertors and
was little if no degradation in quality. I swapped the Sigma with my Dads Nikon purely for
weight issues that my Dad had with the Nikon, he just wasn’t able to carry it around and the
Sigma was a little bit lighter and smaller. But an excellent lens and as you say half the price!
