Bands that left an impression from when you were a "kid

By the way “kid” still applies up to today. Here’s a few. Pink Floyd,Beatles,Thin Lizzy,Blondie, one in particular being Focus and the song “Sylvia”.Came across it the other day on you tube and brought back memories of the early 70’s and that very tune playing over and over on my uncle’s record player. Many songs bring back memories hopefully more good than bad ones.Wonder what bands or music would be favoured by the members on this forum.Maybe just tryin’ a bit of budget escapism!

First album I was given: Beatles 1962-1966

First album I bought: PaulMcCartney. Pipes of Peace (bought in a Hypermarche in France, we were on a family camping holiday, it cost 70 francs…..it was either that or U2 Under a Blood Red Sky (think I made a bad choice).

Band names I wrote on my school desk: U2, Led Zeppelin, The Doors.

Album I listened to on the car stereo when my dad was dropping me off to my first leaving cert exam (English Paper I, Higher – naturally): Easy Pieces, Lloyd Cole.

Album that convinced me that not all good music had come out 15 years ago: The Stone Roses, The Stone Roses.

Albums I from my college years that I never hear any more and am nostalgic about:
The Sundays: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
Neds Atomic Dustbin (blank tape, don’t know the album name)
    Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted
    The Sugarcubes: Life’s Too Good.

First Compact Disc I got: Sergeant Peppers (the so-called ‘greatest album of all-time’ – a big disappointment).

Bands that left an impression from way back when pussy was a kitten?

Okay, in my school days, they had these lunch time “concerts” in the basement. We are talking about early teens here, so a live band was indeed a real treat. There was one called “Frankie Corpse & the undertakers” who started nearly each song with 1-2-3-4 before banging out a Ramones cover. Although destined for a short life, I suspect that its by no coincidence that I like listening to music LOUD… Around then as well, there was this other crowd called the Hype who were so good they were allowed perform on the boiler house roof during “open day”…. they went on to perform on some more lofty rooves sinse then mind you.

Although I wouldnt consider myself a fan of U2 (or Frankie Corspe for that matter), an impression was definetly made.

    Thin Lizzy.

I may still be a “kid” of some description. But my earliest memory of my da was him dancin me around our old kitchen as a tiny one to Dancing in the Moonlight.

Good times, now I’m a die hard fan. :D

There was always music in my parents house.
My grandfather played an accordian & a mouthorgan.
My father (a farmer) was always singing. Still is at 80.
When we were out in the fields as kids, weeding & stuff we’d all be singing in turn.
I particularly remember a beautiful song he sang called The last rose of summer.
I learned to play the harmonica & accordion & learned a few songs which I used to sing
at family get togethers (Organised musical evenings with tea/sandwiches/cakes where
all present did their party piece).

When I went to college I was exposed to The Beatles (the aforementioned blue & red albums),
Neil Young (Harvest), James Taylor, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac & of course Mr Zimmerman.
I already had the harmonica & I just had to have a guitar.

Then I discovered live bands. Waterford RTC used to have rock bands in sometimes.
Jimmy Slevin is a name that springs to mind.

The boat club in Blackrock in Cork had great bands like Sleepy Hollow.
I just had to play in a band. Happy days.

Work came along and I found myself spending loads of time in Dublin.
Freddy White, Scullion, The business, Red Peters, Jimmy faulkner et al
in the Beal Bocht, Slatterys of Capel Street, The Meeting Place & the Baggot Inn.

Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Paul Brady,
ZZ Top, The Kinks, Status Quo, Nancy Griffith and on and on in the Stadium, Slane,
Leixlip, The Point Depot, The RDS, Marley Park ………

They are all etched in my head. Our house is full of music, guitars, amps, mics,
recording stuff, cds. Theres a Marshall guitar amp permanently plugged in in the
hallway which can be fired up at a moments notice and a session can break out.

My son Jonathan has done as I did and listened to his father. He is playing guitar,
writing songs & playing every singer songwriter club that will have him. We have
driven to Dublin & back recently just a play a few songs before a Status Quo tribute band.
I’m really chuffed that he is happy to share a stage with his dad.

I’m really sorry. I’ve gone on too long.

To answer the brilliant question implied in your thread title & thanks for asking.

You will never have heard of them but it had my father on lead vocals &
my grandfather on 2 row button accordion, mouthorgan & spoons.

    John.
